The Purling London concept is contemporary, luxury chess sets that contrast traditional hand-carved Staunton pieces against abstract, modern art and light.
The Art Chess products are individually hand painted by specially commissioned British based contemporary artists including Olivia Pilling, Joana Scislowicz and Richard Morrissey.
The launch of Purling London is timely given Andrew Paulson's recent multi-million dollar investment in worldwide chess media rights. YouGov statistics estimate that 12% of UK adults currently play chess and with the recent sold out shows of Chess Boxing at the Royal Albert Hall, the critically acclaimed 'Art of Chess' exhibition at the Saatchi gallery (featuring sets from Tracey Ernin and Damien Hirst) and the FIDE Candidates Tournament on Savoy Place, chess is enjoying a surge in popularity.
“I wanted to create chess products for fine art collectors and chess players alike. Many chess sets are functional. These are great to play, but for me not objects that you would necessarily leave on display. Fine art chess sets are striking and thought-provoking, but often impractical to play. I designed Purling London chess sets to be unique, contemporary, beautifully shaped and colored; but professional specification, recognizable, robust and straightforward to play. I wanted Purling London to challenge art lovers and captivate chess fanatics.” – Simon Purkis, the founder and director of Purling London.
