Fashionista Tech Review: Apple MacBook Air laptop is perfect for travel

The new MacBook Air laptop has an ‘all day battery’, faster graphics, better wifi and storage with the same stylish looks, useful programs and easy-to-use interface; no wonder we love it.

As someone who travels for work on a monthly basis, I’ve been looking for the perfect combination of computer / smartphone / tablet that will allow me to do all the things I need to do without feeling like I’m [literally] carrying my office on my back.

After recently upgrading to the iPhone 5S I’m pretty sure my smartphone choice is perfectly covered ‒ that’s another review all together though ‒ so it was time to sort out my laptop versus tablet issues. Having to drag my work-provided, practically-bomb-proof-and-weighs-a-tonne laptop around the world was giving me major back strain so I was excited to give the new Apple MacBook Air 11 inch laptop a whirl.

Weighing in at only a bit over a kilo (1.08 kg), this alone made me sigh in relief. The vaunted new “fourth generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors” give the 13 inch version up to 12 hours of battery life, but the 11 inch gets a fairly decent 9 hours of battery life ‒ that’s “8 hours of iTunes movie playback” or about 6 hours of my sort of work, namely uploading and editing videos, writing stories and working on images.

This doesn’t sound a lot, but then I was trialling the version with the 1.3 GHz processor and 4GB of memory; I’ll have to upgrade to the 256GB of flash storage that’s also available for a bit extra.

The improved speed, however, from the “1.3 GHz processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.6 GHz” was fabulous. The 11 inch MacBook Air looks like a “netbook” but works like a full-blown laptop, the perfect solution for people who work and travel.

The computer also has two microphones, a FaceTime HD camera, high-speed Thunderbolt port, two USB 3.0 ports, a backlit keyboard (perfect for typing up a story in dingy backstage at fashion shows), a Energy Star 5.2 rating and the LED-backlit displays are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass ‒ for the more environmentally sensitive user.

When you get your MacBook Air it comes with OS X Mountain Lion, so you get Messages, Notification Center, system-wide sharing, AirPlay Mirroring, Dictation, Game Center and Gatekeeper already built in.

As for the conundrum I was facing over whether to also take a tablet with me when I travel ‒ for watching movies, checking social media etc ‒ I realized that with the 11 inch MacBook Air I don’t need to. The combination of the new iPhone 5S and this particular laptop means I get the best of all tech worlds in just two devices.

Finally, a weight reduction for my international flights! This means I can buy more shoes, yay!

The new MacBook Air 11 inch comes with fourth generation Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors, a 1.3 GHz processor, Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.6 GHz, 4GB of memory and is available with 128GB of flash storage starting at SG$1,348 inc. GST, and 256GB of flash storage starting at SG$1,588 inc. GST. Shop the MacBook Air at Apple Authorised Resellers and online at For more information about Apple products, go to
