Marchesa Resort 2015

The seventies, early summer gardens, Chantilly lace with intricate beading or illusion-net necklines topped with Maharaja-ready embroidery: For their latest resort collection for Marchesa, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig went back to the line’s flouncy, feminine roots.

“It’s about that ease and romance,” Chapman said, indicating a pair of dresses done up in a blurred, painterly pastel gauze, the effect being something like an Impressionist take on tie-dye. This collection went all in for lace: silk wool wide-legged trousers (a revisit from one of their first collections) were topped with flowing lace blouses (that forgiving silhouette was no accident: “You can actually eat!” Chapman grinned), cocktail frocks boasted billowing sleeves and silver lace neckline detailing, and one short gently glittering standout came replete with flowering vines—“our take on a tulip,” said Craig—delivered via intricate floral threadwork.

Soft pastels made up much of the palette and femininity was rarely far from the conversation, as trousers, never the Marchesa trademark (“People always ask whether this is the first time we’re doing trousers. We’ve done them since the first collection!” said Craig), were rendered in breezy, flowing chiffon and right in line with the rest of the collection’s romance-ready silhouettes.
