The secret to Ines De La Fressange's Uniqlo success, now that she's three seasons in creating her collaborative collections for the lifewear brand?
"French mess," she laughs, self deprecatingly referring to the elements of her life that Naoki Takizawa, Uniqlo creative director, sees as being typically her.
"You don't know it yourself. The last time I went to your apartment, it was there," offers Takizawa before Fressange interjects with: "It was a big mess with the dog, the children - that's not DNA, that's mess," she laughs.
But "it" is something. Fressange - the renowned French model who worked as muse for Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel in the Eighties, has been a brand ambassador for Roger Vivier, has launched her own fashion label and more besides - has a natural ease and sophistication, and it's something she's injected into her range each time.
"It's not that I want to make a revolution - I'm just looking for simple things, not boring," she says, pointing out how her age provides inspiration. "Its hard to be 57. You don't want to look granny used to when she was 57 but there's no way you want to look like someone who is 20, because you're not. When things are good, it's universal - 16 to 60,' she says.
This understanding, she elaborates has come from her years in fashion.
"If you think about the mythical products in fashion, are you thinking about a special woman? No. you just want it for you."
And though she may be well-known for her effortlessly cool and downbeat style, that;s not to say that Fressange doesn't feel the pressure when getting dressed in the morning.
"I always feel like a bad teenager - when I go out of the office I think I can't go out the way I was dressed on Sunday. I have to make an effort and I don't want to make an effort. I would like to keep the comfort of Sunday," she says. And this again was a key point when approaching her own collections. "Let's find a solution for these women so you don't feel bad."
