Some compared him to Donald Trump, and some says he is like Vladimir Putin.
But to the Davaoenos, he is just simply their Tatay Digong. A loving father for his family, and a strict great leader for his community.
We are not in Davao, and yes only the Davaoenos and the people who have travelled and lived in the city can prove and attest who is the real Rodrigo Duterte.
And our fellow people all over the world wants to know his real identity.
Luckily, Steve Chao of 101 East (Canadian journalist of Al Jazeera English) published a one-on-one, unbiased interview with Mayor Duterte (aired last April 7) had a chance to visit his place, his home town and loving citizens, witnessing first-hand how the Mayor runs Davao, from one of the most dangerous place, and rising it to one of the safest cities in the world.
Rodrigo Duterte is indeed a very interesting personality, colorful and gained rockstar status.
On kissing women...
As protector of prostitutes...
Steve Chao: Why you are so protective of them (prostitutes)?
Rodrigo Duterte: Because it's human thing to do. You cannot give job to everybody. It's the oldest profession in the world... it's everywhere.
Steve Chao: So, you don't see these as case of criminality..?
Rodrigo Duterte: No, Personally I don't look at it (prostitutes) as a crime.. it's a public health issue.
On his campaign to fight and stop drugs, criminality and corruptions
On making sure that during accidents or any emergencies, there is always someone ready to help
On making sure that everyone is safe walking / driving the streets of Davao
Rodrigo Duterte: I don't need to create a death squad. It is the job of every policeman, or every citizen, to make the arrest.
