BEHIND THE SCENE – What it Takes to Become a MODELE PHILIPPINES

how to become a professional model in Manila

How awesome it would be seeing your own self on the pages of most high fashion magazines, seasonal TVC and/or fashion ad campaigns, or being the frequent face of runway shows, plus attending prive parties in the metro or flying back and for just for your photo shoot in Singapore and Tokyo. Isn’t that cool right?

But don’t you know that before you become that IT Model of the Decade, you must undergo the screening / go-see / audition or whatever they call it.

Okay, once modeling was also been part of my dream and I think strutting the runway is like walking in heaven (yeah I fantasize it a lot) but then years have passed and I realized it wasn’t for me, after realizing it is REALLY NOT FOR ME.

(That’s one of the reasons why this website is born so I can express myself and of course be the model of my own. #shamelessadvertising)

Anyway, things was got excited when I was invited to cover a go-see event of MODELE PHILIPPINES and PMAP known as Professional Modeling Association of the Philippines, two of most prestigious modeling association in the country.

And I can’t believe I’m in their go-see event!

I’ve been to numbers of runway shows locally and international, but for a go-see this is my first-time. I thought this is incredible (a huge shout-out for my PR friends from AMPR for tagging me).

Do you know that at the back of those glamorous shoots, tells LOTS of stories???
Apart from the basic requirements, such us striking face, good body built, almost perfect vital stats – I’ve learned that these are not enough.
Good attitude is a must.

Just listening to the panel of judges (especially from Mama Renee Salud) makes me think it is not that easy. If you are a super-sensitive person (or balat-sibuyas in Filipino metaphor) you might cry. Good thing each of all candidates have their own way to handle stress and pressure in front of the panel, and that is way cool!  Challenging your confidence, asking about your past, and other issues that some candidates find it uncomfortable, but still holding their ground – ah it is unbelievable. They are really good.

Some of them have professional modeling experience, some attended a modeling summer camp, and others have not – just relying on their guts, self-studying with runway shows online and on TV. And there are some who are just born to be a model, with zero background but strikes every angle in absolute perfection.

Honestly, I couldn’t help but to take some notes each time Mama Renee utters her words. She’s full of surprises, and honesty -- no wonder there are lots of people in the industry likes her to be their mentor and friend.

Some came early with their BFF’s , some traveled all the way from Rizal with her Mom for her first go-see! Ah, it was so touching hearing their Moms’ words of encouragement, and full support no matter what. Indeed they are blessed.

    1. Yeah, I do noticed that most youngers here in the Philippines (especially if they know they have the looks) often dream of becoming a model, and I honestly don't know why. Yeah I did dreamt of becoming a model before (lol) them I realized I'm not the one. That I could do more!

    1. I was just a insider blogger, and stayed there I think 4 hours, and I'm telling you it is not all glam... it was very tiring... huge respect for the crew and makeup artists and photographer for having that long patience.

  4. I had to stop and get a good look at that charming young man with the afro! It must be very difficult being a model. I wouldn't be able to cope with the judge's comments, I'm far too sensitive!

    1. Exactly!

I even saw this pretty model applicant who was yelled by his Mom (yeah his MOM) when he pose a bit awkwardly because he is a bit shy. OMG I encountered a dragon Mom!

  6. It is interesting as people assume models have this amazing confidence, some looked nervous, some happy, some stressed out completely. I like that you went to this go-see event and that a good attitude is a must! Who wants to work with a someone who will not portray positivity to the brand?

    1. All of them have their own stories, and I feel so blessed that I have to witness their audition. During the interview, you could feel behind the camera their sincerity, and their eyes are full of emotions, full of hope to reach their dream. Huge respects for them!

  7. being a model or going into modelling isnt something one should just rush into for the facts that their friends are into it, they should get the fact that passion tells alot on this industry, without the passion for modelling, there is no magic into succeeding in it. with the passion, the hardwork and other essentials will come naturally.

  8. Modelling is a lot more than what it actually is. There is a lot of hardwork and buildup required. I am glad you made it through this far. All the best :)

I always wondered what goes on behind the scenes, what kind of pressure the contestants may be facing...reading all this was an eye opener.

    1. Hello Indrani,

Yeah at first I thought it was all about the glam, but when I saw it myself geez pressure and stress is so high!

  12. The modeling world sure is a hard one to walk (literally) and is full of brutal competition to be that cover model. But for those who are able to get there, I imagine the lifestyle can be quite glamarous. It is awesome you have the chance to peek behind the curtain and see what it is really like. When I was a teenager, I went to a summer camp where one of the speakers had everyone stand up and then she read off the physical requirements to be a model. If we didn't qualify, we had to sit down. In the end, there was one person still standing.

    1. Yeah modeling agents have very strict standards on choosing their new models, because of the very demanding needs of the clients. They aim perfection. It's a tough world, but a rewarding experience, and if someone make it to the cut - that's fabulous!
