Quick Tips To Create A Home Office You'll Actually Want To Work In

How To Create your own Home Office

If you are one of the lucky people that get to work from home, we are officially jealous. No commute, access to your own kitchen, and most importantly, you get to work in a familiar and comfortable environment.

We all know that home office are great but you still need to be productive and it’s no good having a space that you don’t like because you simply won’t make use of it. Take a look at these top tips for creating a home office that you will actually work in.

1. Filing

You need to make sure you have somewhere to put papers, but we all know that filing cabinets aren’t the most attractive part of an office.
If you are looking for an alternative storage method that can stop your papers from cluttering up your desk, create a system that works for you with baskets, folders, or trays.

2. Natural Light

You don’t want to have a cooped-up feeling all day, so taking advantage of the natural light available to make your home office feel fresh and airy.

If you have smaller windows or only a small amount of natural light, use lamps to brighten the space.

3. Go Green

Plants make your environment feel more homely and less like an office so they are an obvious choice for home offices.

Choose ones that are low maintenance so if you don’t want to step into your office on the weekend to water them, you don’t have to.

4. Tidy your cables

We all know that there is nothing more unsightly than cables hanging around all over your desk, especially as it is an issue that is so easy to fix.
For a tidy desk space, use a cable tidy to gather your cables into one neat tube that you can hide behind your desk

5. Overestimate on the storage

No matter how much storage space you think you need, you will always need more. You need to think of storage of excess supplies like paper clips, extra notebooks, printer paper as well as storage for your documents.

It is essential to make sure things are well labeled and easy to get to, especially if you don’t want to have to sift through stacks of boxes to get to the extra staples. This will also help to keep the space tidy as it means that you can also put things away easily.

6. Create an escape

Just because you have to work at home all day, doesn't mean you can't make your home office somewhere you want to spend time in. What could be better than a home office that reminds you of a faraway place like the seaside? Use blues and whites and lots of natural light to create the ultimate workspace that you find relaxing and enjoyable

7. Choose your chairs carefully

If you are spending all day sitting at your desk you want to be sat on something comfortable and good for your body. Dining chairs might look great, but they might not be the most supportive options for your back.

If you like to change up how you are working, it might be a good idea to add an armchair to the room, ideal for reading over papers or briefs, or if you just want to relax in a comfy chair for a bit during the workday. This works because you are still in your office, i.e. your working environment, but you can relax or using this space for reading.

8. Change up the space

If you love to have family photos on the walls or a picture of your significant other on your desk, make sure to change up the space to stop these features from melting into the background.

Rotate or change the pictures to make a friendly environment where you actually enjoy the photos that are around.

9. Shelves are your friend

If you are lacking floor space, there is a simple solution: use the walls. Floating shelves are a great way to give you more storage and display options that don't crowd your desk or your floor. Having these shelves will help the space feel less cluttered and more organized.

Home offices can be a great place to be, but without the proper decor, it can be the worst part of your house. Let us know in the comments below what you thought of these tips and if you have any other great tips for decorating and making the most of your home office.

  1. Good points on all counts. I've been working from home for 5 years now. Shelves are important. If you're working online I don't think filing is too much of a big deal since everything is digital. It's worth it to invest in prettifying your space.

    1. Hello Manavi,

For wooden tables, try to look something simple and no carvings. That way it is very easy to polish and be cleaned.
