How to Make Your Own Terrarium

How to Make Your Own Terrarium
For the last couple of months, I’ve been thinking of adding some living green inside my apartment.

You see, living in this concrete jungle sometimes need a little of relaxation which waiting for the right moment to file that leave-of-absence at work. I was so tied-up with my busy-ness, one of the reason why I put my little gardening project on-hold.

But few week ago, my friend from The Local Ninja, invited me over to join them for a Sunday’s workshop.

Sunday? It’s supposed to have my beauty rest!!!

However, it’s hard to say NO to some good friends that I haven’t seen for a while, so I texted her to “sign me in!”

*******

Okay, it’s been ages since the last time my hands played with dirt and stuffs.

Most of you doesn’t know that I love gardening. I have to give credit to my elementary teachers for forcing me and my classmates, and eventually learned to love gardening by heart.

Gosh, we have to bear the heat of the sun just to toil the soil, plant and water those greens twice every day!

And if my plants die, so as my grades!

Yeah, that’s how cruel my teachers are…

And I can’t complain to my parents about it because “….hey planting is good, and you must obey to get those high grades!” or if I don’t I would end up doing the whole house chores for a week (actually, I did it once and it was difficult, then I lied telling my Mom I am sick so I wouldn’t continue the chores, eventually not completing it, hahahaha).

Sorry Mom!

So many nostalgia AF but seriously, gardening is good. Especially when you nurtured it well and got to see the first sprout of flower buds…

OOhhhhh it feels so good! And those hot and sweaty days doesn’t matter anymore.

I also learned how to grow vegetables – YES deary! Even those pumpkins!

But I’ll share that story on my separate post.

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

My friend told me that I have nothing to worry about and no need to bring planter materials.
Am I excited? Of course I am!

Our workshop was held at this cool place called Frank & Dean (located at Forbestown, BGC). It was so nice that the attendees were so diverse – both ladies and gents in different age bracket, and we also have a little gardener with us!

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

The workshop was very straight forward, and I would like to thank our “terrarium kol” for giving us some starting points how to create our own terrarium.

(I actually forgot his name, so I thought giving him a “terrarium KOL” name is cool!).

He brought so us different kinds of dessert plants, including those cacti and some succulents.

I admit I was feeling exciting because this workshop brings back my childhood memories.

And ooppss those pebbles! It reminds me of the pebbles in my Mom’s place – we live near the sea, so having these stones, dried corals and pebbles are just ordinary sight.

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

Using our own creative imagination, we started to arrange our own terrarium using those pebbles, cultured soil, some rocks, dried branches and shells, etc. And of course, we have to pick our dessert plants for our own little world.

It was so easy, and there’s no strict rules to follow.

Just try not to forget that you have a living thing inside your house.

Here are some of the BTS photos during our workshop!

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

I think the star during our workshop, is our little gardener. This little missy is so eager to learn and even designed her own little green world! Awesome!

I’m not sure whether I still have a green-thumb, so after our session I did a little of refresher course.

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

And here’s what I’ve learnt:

Choose the best plant – If you’re prone to killing your plants, the best thing to do is to choose one that is the hardiest and won’t be too sensitive to mistreatment (ie over/underwatering, putting it in the wrong place etc). We were told by Mr. Terrarium KOL that a few tolerant plants to pick from are those cactus and succulents, especially is we have limited spaces in the apartment.

Put it in the right place – Different plants will have different lighting requirements, and lack of light is what often kills plants. Either ask your plant seller or google your plant type to work out if it belongs on the window sill in full sunlight, or in the corner of the room in the shade. When in doubt I go for more light than for less.

How to Make Your Own Terrarium

Don’t over (or under) water –  The amount of water your plant needs will again be determined by the plant type, but in general, plants with lots of bushy foliage will need more water than plants with waxy or leathery leaves. I love cactus and succulents as they usually only need to be watered once a week. Remember that overwatering can be worse than underwatering so be careful – if the leaves are turning yellow you might be overwatering.

Experiment with pots – Try out all different types of pots – boxes, dishes, watering cans, tins, buckets etc, but make sure the pot has drainage holes so water can get out.
Maintain your plants – When your plants grown, make sure to trim them and clean their leaves regularly.

Don’t forget about them – A few times I have actually completely forgotten about my plants for weeks at a time, and haven’t noticed them until they have started to turn brown. I find that by watering at the same time every day/week you create a routine which is harder to break. When in doubt go for cactus or other more difficult to kill plants.

And there you have it – a few very small pointers for creating your own terrarium. Would love to hear from any green thumbs out there – what have I missed? Enjoy the photos during our workshop, and I hope that you’ll be inspired to create your own.

Remember, planting is good for our qi, and for our holistic beauty!
