We save a certain percentage of our hard-earned salary, and even strapped-tied even more quitting all those junk foods and sodas, to save money for that newest palette.
If you haven’t heard this term then I assumed that you’ve been in your cave for quite some time.
Dumpster diving was started two years ago, were many beauty gurus in the western part of the continent, literally checking those dumpster at the back of the famous beauty stores, and hunt those thrown make-up and yes even skincare!
Eeeewwww!!!
Last week, I just stumbled this growing beauty trend on Youtube, and I couldn’t help but watch the few video clips. These beauty gurus or they called themselves Dumpster Diving Divas, are hoarding make-up with accumulating worth of $2,000 and even $10,000 worth of make-up and skincare, all they’ve got from various dumpsters near their city.
I honestly couldn’t helped feeling scandalous, and I couldn’t believe that these women and so-called beauty gurus will do everything (even its disgusting!) just to get those make-up.
You can watch some video clips here, here and here and prepare yourself to feel cringed.
Everyday, many beauty stores throw their make-up in the trash bins. These make-up are either returns from the customers, or some samples that needs replacements. In the United States and other western countries, there are certain laws on proper cosmetic disposal, and yes that kind of disposal costs them money. So in order to save some cost and also time, some beauty stores let them employees do the disposal by literally destroying make-up and pouring with some soaps or liquid detergents and throw it out in the dumpster.
But not all are getting destroyed because it also takes time to do that. I could imagine it is also kind of lame job. Others just throw it out without destroying it fully.
And here comes the dumpster divers.
Most of the divers do it during night time, searching all the beauty stores’ dumpsters to find some “beauty treasures”. Every make-up they could find, they get it.
And these vlogger dumpster divers are even recording scores just like they do would do from their beauty hauls.
These beauty scavengers are always geared up with gloves and rubbing alcohol, getting inside the huge bins and getting those treasures and avoiding those items that are mixed with liquids and can’t be cleansed.
Back then, this trend is done underground but not anymore as many beauty gurus online are flaunting their dumpster hauls.
And some even make it worst…
They even sell their scavenged makeup online!
Check your Facebook and you can see many secret group account, that sells dumpster diving makeups.
Okay I understand that there are times a woman will do everything to save some cash in order to buy something, and maybe that includes digging someone else’s trash bin for make-ups, but this might makes sense if you use all your dumpster hauls for personal use. Well at least you alone will take care of the sanitation (and possible disease you might acquire too). But selling those dumpster diving online is way too disgusting.
You see, no matter how much you tell other that you’ve sanitized it properly with alcohol, still some DNA will not die in there. The only way to properly sanitized make-up is to put in in high temperature (the way cosmetic companies do it) and that would disrupting the physical form and quality of the make-up.
Wiping the surfaces with rubbing alcohol, will never sanitized your make-up.
You are only contributing to spread possible disease in the community. If you love dumpster diving, then just spare the others from future hospitalization.
Eeewwwww!!!!
Well I’m not the only one who feel disgusted.
I’ve doubled check Youtube if I could find an Asian beauty guru that does dumpster diving, and so far I haven’t found one (if you do please let me know!). Most Asians are notoriously very stingy and knows how to save, however you rare see Asians dumpster diving for make-up because of pride. That attitude is a huge deal for Asians.
And if there are many make-up products that needs to be disposed, many beauty stores in Asia opt to dispose it not in the trash, but their employees segregated them properly and bring home for personal consumption.
I couldn’t blame if some beauty stores are pouring bleach on discarded make-up just to deter these dumpster divers.
There are many ways on how to save and get those make-up for FREE and that doesn’t include the trash bins.
Have you tried dumpster diving? Are you tempted to do it?
xoxo, Blair
oh gosh... why are thy coming out with such digusting make up ideas... and last time it was that condom with beauty blender stuff.... yucks....
ReplyDeleteI know right! The disgust in me is heightened up. Why letting themselves wear trash?
DeleteThis is so funny and kind of extreme. I would rather buy poundshop makeup, thank you very much. Hmmm,do I know any beauty gurus who do this?
ReplyDeletehttps://hauteandcomely.blogspot.co.uk/
Oh better check babe. I've heard some beauty gurus secretly doing it and just pretending they've bought it as brand new.
Deleteinteresting to know of this. I recalled a beauty blogger giveaway expired beauty products before not sure who is it.
ReplyDeleteWTF?!!!!!! Whoever she is - she is HORRIBLE!!!
DeleteWow, never had I came across this term " dumpster diving" until I came across your blog today. Nope , I would never ever do that. As mentioned, gross and dangerous. I would rather fork out or just not using them if I dun have money.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand how some of them did it. They will do literally everything for the sake of make-up addiction.
DeleteThere should be a beauty-shrink.
never tried. but thanks for the helpful tips, i don't mind exploring!
ReplyDeleteYou are OKAY to explore dumpsters and filthy garbage bins?
DeletePeople seriously do this? GROSS. Catching someone else's cooties is NOT worth saving anything on makeup.
ReplyDeleteIf my Mom will find out I also did this, she will literally throw my make-up and soak in water. Trash are not allowed at home.
DeleteWho comes up with this stuff! Diving in a garbage for already used make up? That CANNOT be sanitary. What will they come up with next?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine dear! What worries me most is that they even recommend to do this. They are influencing viewers for trespassing!
DeleteThis is just...gross. I had no idea that dumpster diving for makeup was a "thing". I don't even let my FRIENDS borrow my makeup.
ReplyDeleteI know right!
DeleteThese vloggers are influencing the viewers especially the younger people. Decency have flown out of the window.
I would never dumpster dive for makeup, I have thought about going for other stuff, but am not that brave. I'll stick to buying my makeup :) especially with all these points you've made.
ReplyDeleteThank you Crystal. Going to dumpster is a huge NO NO!
DeleteWoah. Is this seriously a thing???? I can't believe it! It just isn't that serious. Lol. Dumpster diving for makeup? I mean wow....
ReplyDeleteWhen you search it on Youtube, OMG you will see lots of beauty gurus doing it. Which now questions me their credibility and spreading quality content. OMG, the materials isn't quality at all.
DeleteIt's sad that some will go to such lengths just for make-up. I agree that dumspter diving is gross! It's also a shame though that so much gets wasted on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteThere are valid reasons why companies are discarding these make-up especially the return items, because they would never know if the customers already used the items or not. Once its opened, its already exposed.
Ick no, I could never do this. It's cool that other people are finding success dumpster diving, but it is most certainly not for me.
ReplyDeleteOhh dear, your son will definitely scolded you if you did this.
DeleteThis sounds pretty cool, I wouldn't mind giving it a try.
ReplyDeleteWow that's cool. Let us know what you've got inside the trash bins soon!
DeleteWhhaatt? I did not know this was a thing! I would be scared of getting my makeup from the trash, it might be expired and you don't know who touched it!
ReplyDeleteOr it might some rats have peed on the make-up and they didn't know.
DeleteI would worry about the bacteria of dumpster products. I just say yuck and no way.
ReplyDeleteYeah, those bacteria cannot be cleaned or killed by just isoprophyl alcohol.
Deletewhat an interesting concept
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting Jaycie!
DeleteI have never heard of dumpster diving but the findings are literal gold. It is a bit scary though, to go at night
ReplyDeleteIt's a fool gold Ashvin.
DeleteCompletely disgusting and how vain! If they can't afford $1000 worth of makeup, maybe hit the local discount store. Makes my skin crawl.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I understand. I won't do this either. Trash are not allowed inside my house.
DeleteI'm with ya! The quest for beauty is often an expensive pain in the ass. I'm convinced a chill runs down my husband's spine every time I approach a cosmetics counter. bawahaha
ReplyDeleteLOL me too! My boyfriend is like giving me that warning-look each time we passed on beauty counter.
DeleteI am very OCD so even the thought of a dumpster dive is give me the heebie jeebies. Why would anyone want used make up that has been in the bins. No just no!
ReplyDeleteSome say they are helping to conserve, and avoid littering! LOL
DeleteWow, what a post.. Never heard of dumpster diving seriously but now after having a look at your post, it seems so tempting to me!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that dear!
DeleteI should admit that I'm a cheapskate especially now that I'm already a mom. I will definitely try these tricks.
ReplyDeleteJust be super careful not to get some diseases that you might transfer to your kids. Safety first!
DeleteI think if you want to do it then go for it. Obviously it is not for everyone. I can see the appeal it would have for some people.
ReplyDeleteI guess its okay if they love doing it... but selling it??? NO NO NO
DeleteOmg.... I had no idea people were doing this! I can't believe how anyone would want to use makeup someone tossed out! Ewwww... I am soooo grossed out by this information right now. I seriously am shocked that this is a common thing! Thanks for shedding some light on this!
ReplyDelete~Crissy

If you want, you can visit the dumpster at the back of Sephora and ULTA during night time, and you'll see humongous divers.
DeleteSeriously??? I can't even think of applying something knowing they were dumped in the dustbin!
ReplyDeleteJust imagine if someone have spit on those make-up and it dried out, LOL
DeleteMake-up is awesome but I will never try dumpster diving for it. We put it on our skin and getting it from a garbage bin is never a great idea. I think these girls ought to think about what they're doing to themselves.
ReplyDeleteIt might be okay if they don't try to sell it, and not broadcasting their deeds. What happen to shame and decency?
DeleteNope, I am never doing this one for any amount of money and even more so, for attention. I think it's sick and gross. There's too much germs in these already and you don't even know who threw it away and why they needed to.
ReplyDeleteHello Amanda,
DeletePlease help to spread awareness because this is not a very healthy deed.
Thanks for the tips. Will try it out later.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Jane!
DeleteIt's so shocking to know about these dumpster divers ... simply unbelievable how can they use these cosmetics on themselves :/
ReplyDeleteand do they actually finished all of those make-ups? They are helping not to save actually. They are helping to spread possibility of spreading disease and skin problems.
DeleteAnd what if that palette was returned by someone with Hepatitis and swatch it?
That's why stores throw it away!
I used to work for a retailer. And I did find it a bit disgusting that they would dump out half of their merchandise that would go unsold. But dumpster diving for it afterwards just sounds crazy to me. I can hardly believe that they do it, but I know that they do.
ReplyDeleteCompanies are throwing it in their dumpster for a reason. They should dumped it properly but as I've said, it will cost them.
DeleteBest is, they should LOCKED their dumpsters.
This is disgusting! As somebody who worked in a department store on the beauty floor I'd advise anybody NOT to do this! A lot is out of date or tester makeup that's been used by people you don't know! Thanks for highlighting this problem
ReplyDeleteYeah, and sometimes it is truly scary even have a swatch in beauty store. We never know if someone who swatch first have skin disease, eeewwww
DeleteWow. You really took a lot of effort for collecting the twitter and youtube post for this blog post dear.
ReplyDeleteThank you Shini,
DeleteIts like an investigative blog post, hehe. OMG Did you know someone who do dumpster diving in Malaysia or Singapore?
This seems so strange & scary, I can't imagine dumpster diving for anything & certainly not makeup
ReplyDeleteI guess dumpster diving for furniture will be okay. But make-up? its a no no. Okay there is a serious waste issue in America.
DeleteLoved these ways, would definitely be trying them to get my free make-up samplesm;)
ReplyDeleteJust be careful with sharp edges Lana. Hospitalization is very expensive :)
Deleteeeeew! Ok, really people do this? I'm all for dumpster diving for furniture and building supplies but makeup? Don't they know all the bacteria and more that could be residing in the makeup?
ReplyDeleteFor furniture and building supplies, its okay because it is easy to clean. But make-up you can't disinfect it with just isopropyl alcohol.
DeleteThat is just bad. I never heard of it but it just makes me feel wrong. I can't even buy fake makeup let alone use ones from the garbage. What a great read and made me see a different side.
ReplyDeleteJackie | fashionxfairytale |
Thank you Jackie,
DeleteSometimes a hand-me-down make-up from your sister is okay, because you know the person, but still there is nothing more satisfying than brand new make-up. I am more concern about the diseases that they would get. They most of them they are selling what they've got from the trash!
Yes, buyers are aware of it. So is that means we should tolerate the wrong, even though we know that we are risking ourselves???
ewww this is seriously gross but then I personally know of people who have to dumpster dive for food, for survival. I think this doesn't happen in Asia because make up is not dumped like that?
ReplyDeleteTransporting of goods to Asia is not cheap. And I haven't heard anyone here in Asia that dumpster dive for make-up. Back in the 90's my Mom's friend shared us that they do dumpster dive for furniture, clothes, house wares, etc. in Japan. But since 5-years ago things have change. Dumpster diving is illegal. But make-up, skincare and cosmetics are never been dumpster dive because of sanitation issue. They are literally destroyed.
DeleteNever knew this was a thing. Of course, I don't pay attention to beauty gurus.
ReplyDeleteThen thanks for your lovely visit Robert!
DeleteOh wow I have never heard about this, but it's honestly surprising what people are doing nowadays for 'free' stuff..
ReplyDeleteYeah... its okay to get ill just for freebies.
DeleteI don't know if I agree with going thru a dumpster for makekup. Anything like bacteria, dirt can land on it and you could get very sick.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, those bacteria are so sneaky you'll never know if it will live forever to your skin. eewww!
DeleteThis is definitely not safe to do. You can get diseases, infections, and Lord knows what else from used makeup.
ReplyDeletethe scariest part is, what if an HIV+ had swatched those lipsticks and you've got it. Holy Jesus!
DeleteI saw the videos on the dumpster diving and I agree that maybe its just a little beyond me to try it,lol. But as for anything that goes on the skin, I would rather stick to buying the product straight out from the store ;)
ReplyDeleteIt is truly scary, I hope kids wouldn't dare to do it.
DeleteNo! I'll never try dumpster diving. Honestly, this is my first time hearing this. I'm saying no for sanitary reasons. I couldn't imagine anyone buying ... There's always better ways to get samples.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. Never compromise your health for the sake of vanity.
DeleteI had no idea this was even a thing! Gross! I'd rather pay the money twice over and get makeup that's never been touched.
ReplyDeleteWell, we can't help that they are still many notorious people who can do this. My concern is Stop helping spreading bacteria.
DeleteYour post is so interesting. Thank you for educating me on new this trend, but I don't think I can ever dumpster dive for make up. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteXOXO //SINCERELY OPHELIA | NYC Petite Fashion Blogger
Nope don't dare to dumpster dive for make-up. Its not healthy.
DeleteThis is such a weird trend. I saw some of those videos too. These girls take a lot of risk to go through dumpsters for used old makeup! I don't get it at all.
ReplyDeleteAnd the worst is, they recommend it to their readers to do dumpster diving. Am not sure if they are aware of the consequences. As a blogger / vlogger you much be responsible in whatever you say and recommend. Because readers and viewers trusted you.
Deletevery interesting topic you have here. I have not tried it before. might want to try it in future
ReplyDeleteOh really? Just be careful not to get caught.
DeleteI know some people who've done this, but it was when they were poor and needed things to survive... not just to get extra makeup. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteOkay, doing it once because you are soo poor is okay. Tolerable. But doing it regularly just to have TONS of make-up is a no no.
DeleteUGH! I ...just eww. It amazes me what people do now a days. All the bacteria and diseases that is out there... I wouldn't want to go anywhere near that.
ReplyDeleteExactly dear, very well said.
DeleteWow, I've definitely been in a cave then! Never heard of this phenomenon, but I can see and totally appreciate how worthwhile it is!
ReplyDeleteIf I find a beautiful and discarded furniture then I will get it. But not makeup.
DeletePeople are just NUTS! Why would anyone put makeup they found in the trash on their skin? The potential for contracting a deadly bacteria grows by the minute. Just a sad, sad bit of news.
ReplyDeleteI know right. But these people are being blinded by the branded makeup... then they will complain that the government is not paying for their hospitalization. So pathetic.
DeleteVery sad to know that they are doing this to make up, they should make an alternatives for it
ReplyDeleteThey could make use of the alternatives I have provided. They are safe and decent.
DeleteGross. I'll admit I've gone dumpster diving in the past, but I'd never dive for used makeup. I don't even like sharing makeup with my friends and family, so I can't imagine putting someone else's leftover makeup on my face.
ReplyDeleteFor old furnitures, or discarded planters, I guess its okay to pick them up. Getting anything from the dumpster is not hygienic at all.
DeleteHonestly, I don't think this is a good idea. We are encouraged to ditch make up after a certain number of months because it might have bacteria growing in it. But to pick used palettes in the dump and use it is the craziest think I have ever heard of. I hope they understand that they are posing a danger to their health.
ReplyDeleteYeah, and I also encourage beauty stores to locked their dumpsters, because it also encourages these people. And when they got caught, they will complain.. ridiculous!
Deletenot for me if i am to say the truth, why on earth will i have to do this when other ways are there to go about getting them things. gosssshhhhh!!!1
ReplyDeleteYeah, and worst case, I can live without wearing make-up, nor even from a trash can.
DeleteOh my god, this is so disgusting! It's like using someone else's toothbrush! I would never!
ReplyDeleteYeah, and flaunting it to your readers your wide collection. Some even pretending they've bought it, hahaaha
Deletewell, everybody has different tastes and I just loved it
ReplyDeleteJust be careful, and update your health insurance, just in case.
DeleteThe way you treat this argument is a new way and I love it! I have never tried but thank you for these amazing tips. Can't wait to read the next one :) - A.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Am just helping to spread awareness of the danger of dumpster diving. It is dangerous AF.
DeleteI didn't even know this was a thing!! Omg ewwww....I can't do it there are way to many communicable diseases, germs, and bacteria that we can not see with the naked eye!! Make up goes on your face you shouldn't put something full of bacteria on it....WOW!!
ReplyDeleteThis is what we call, cheapness to the nth level.
DeleteHahaha omg!!!! I never ever would have ever thought of this!!!! I guess it does make sense why people do it... but ewwwww lol
ReplyDeleteExactly. I think its tolerable if they consume it for personal use only. However many dumpster divers for make-up even sells it online. And that is absolutely disgusting!
DeleteThis is so good to know, We gotta be really careful with this
ReplyDeleteThanks for appreciating Neimi. Please help to spread awareness.
DeleteOh My God!! I've never heard of that, I think that's disgusting and in the meanwhile I also feel sorry for the women who need to save money so much that they need to do that... But I couldn't, I don't think I would even have thought of it even if I didn't have money to spend for makeup... It's unhealthy...
ReplyDeleteInteresting read, I had no idea of that
Please help spread awareness of the danger of this dumpster diving. It is not healthy at all.
DeleteI really don't know much about makeups and all . But you look really beautiful after doing that stuff and I like the way you are teaching to others
ReplyDeleteThank Anonymous, am just helping to spread awareness.
DeleteThis is an interesting idea. Fortunately, I don't wear make up.
ReplyDeleteOh good for you! Let's worry then :)
DeleteThat's interesting to know that people go to such extend to get their make-up.
ReplyDeleteYeah and it makes me sad. Which makes me wonder how does the distribution process in the US.
Deletelol... this article is the most interesting thing i ever read in entire thread and this is literally the first time i've ever heard of things like this! I guess that's how people earn their makeup money too. recreate and resell then purchase a clean one for themselves.
ReplyDeleteOMG that idea gives me cringe!
DeleteIdk what I\m gonna feel about this, but its a no for me. I still can use the drugstore brand if I dont have lots of money. haha
ReplyDeleteBetter be safe than get ill.
DeleteWow, I had absolutely NO clue that this even existed. It's unbelievable that this is actually a thing. I can't imagine ever doing that. I rather just buy my make-up. Good to know about this and be careful in buying!
ReplyDeleteBe careful also on what you buy online, because you'll never know if its a make-up from dumpster dive, or something ewww!
DeleteIn all honesty I prefer your way...I can't see myself dumpster diving
ReplyDeleteTRUE! Makeup should earn more respect.
Delete
