We’ve seen them in several places, from supermarkets, shopping malls, and of course, during Sunday church services.
In the pool of many Titas, there’s always one (or two) who carries herself flawlessly, having this pristine look wearing posh clothing in linen (no logos anywhere), clad with their expensive heirloom pieces of jewelry, mixed with a few knick-knacks, with their wicker bags.
What’s with their wicker bags?
Like a curious kid, I always want to have a peek and see what magical tools they’ve got in there, which helps them achieve where they are.
Regardless of how they achieve their wealth, either through hard work or marrying the right person (and family). These are the type of women I would love to have a chance to get some valuable insight into life.
It is worth the time, and no boring moments.
When I was living in the Philippines, I had several chance encounters with these women (I’m not gonna drop their names coz discretion is another lesson I’ve learned from them). These women had managed to turn their lives into an aspirational for many of us, and I admire how strong-willed they are, while making it all classy.
Another source of inspiration, then, is religiously reading the Tatler Magazine. If Carrie Bradshaw managed to starve herself for the latest Vogue, I did it with Tatler.
Tatler pages are full of aspirational stories, and give you insights into what life above the middle class. I wish I had kept those back issues when I moved here in Australia (but I have to travel light).
Years have passed, and after several seasons have changed, I realized that having your authentic style is important. I learned to spot the classic pieces that will never go out of style, gained my love for wearing pearls, including thrifting clothes to style in a posh look.
And of course, the love for wicker bags.
One true-blue rich Tita from Salcedo Village Makati, once told me that ‘owning a wicker bag speaks volumes of your authentic personality.’
No wonder I have several of them, all imported from the Philippines.
Here’s the look I had from one of my ‘rich tita mood’.
Shirt - from op shop at AU$1.00
Pants - white linen (altered to fit) bought from op shop at AU$1.00
Wicker bag - bought from HGQ Handicrafts Philippines.
Shoes and accessories were all bought online from random shops.
