On March 31st 2016, Drinks International announced its highly anticipated Asia’s 50 Best Bars Awards; the first, and only, regional list to be published alongside the internationally renowned World’s 50 Best Bars Awards that takes place annually in October. The bars in the list were voted for by more than 150 industry experts from Asia, representing the ultimate guide to the top bars in the region.
The inaugural list includes bars from 12 cities in 10 countries with restaurant bars, speakeasies, hotel bars, and tiki themed venues all contributing to the diverse and eclectic list.
28 Hongkong Street claimed the title of Asia’s Best Bar taking the number one spot in the list. The bar is lead by a combination of highly regarded industry legends including Michael Callahan, Zdenek Kastanek and David Cordoba. Drinks are renowned for their clean, fresh, flavour-focused approach, all served in a famous Singapore party environment.
Singapore is quickly establishing itself as an epicentre for fine drinking with nine bars ranking in the top 50. In addition to 28 Hongkong Street, the city boasted four bars within the top ten with Manhattan Bar at number five, followed by Operation Dagger at number seven and Jigger & Pony at number 8.
Reaffirming its existing and strong reputation for bar culture, Hong Kong also had nine bars feature in the list. Positioned at number four, Lobster Bar and Grill took the highest spot for the city, closely followed by Quinary at number seven. Located in the Shangri-La Hotel, Lobster Bar’s lavish surroundings and innovative range of bar-aged spirits have gained international attention. In contrast, Quinary combines futuristic techniques to serve up signature Earl Grey Caviar Martinis, all under the watchful eye of owners Charlene Dawes and Antonio Lai.
Just behind Singapore and Hong Kong, Tokyo boasted eight bars in the list. High Five, ranked third, is the brainchild of Hidetsuga Ueno, one of the most influential Japanese bartenders in the world. An ambassador for the Ginza Japanese style of bartending, Ueno is famous for his meticulous approach and eye for detail.
Representing the Chinese bar scene and increasingly receiving international recognition, is Speak Low of Shanghai which came in at number two to be named best bar in China. Run by Japanese bartender Shingo Gokan, the slick speakeasy is hidden behind a sliding door in a boutique retailing premium bartending equipment, and has quickly become known for its exquisite cocktail offering. Other Chinese bars on the list include fellow Shanghai venues The Union Trading Co and Constellation 1, and Beijing bar Janes & Hooch.
Also in the top ten, Kuala Lumpur sits alongside Asia’s cocktail capitals with Omakase + Appreciate ranked tenth best bar in Asia. Run by owners Karl Too & Shawn Chong it has a monthly changing drinks menu, its location in the basement of an anonymous office block places it amongst the other inconspicuous speakeasies on the list. Thailand also fares well with a total of six bars included, the highest being Vesper Bar at number seventeen which creates serious cocktails alongside Italian cuisine, whilst Taiwan, South Korea, Philippines and Indonesia are all also represented on the list.
Drinks International announced the eagerly awaited Asia’s 50 Best Bar Awards via its various social media platforms on 31st March, and is available online at (Worlds50bestbars.com/asia).
