15 Things I Learned from ROTE, and Reasons Why I want to Explore These Six Travel Destinations

15 Things I Learned from ROTE, and Reasons Why I want to Explore These Six Travel Destinations
Sometimes a great location is not enough to drive business in.

Restaurants on the Edge (ROTE) is a Canadian makeover show where culinary establishments get help before they go bust, but the stricken businesses share another quality. They are all on the edge … of a spectacular view! They are seaside, lakeside, mountainside, or in some other precipitous location that ought to give them plenty of buzz. Their drab decor and bland food are a blot on a beautiful landscape.

Things that I learned watching Restaurants on the Edge (Season 1)

• Sometimes restaurants are not just a place to dine in when you are hungry (or bored). It is a place that is personal to the owner, so visiting a restaurant is like dining at someone’s home, where you will see the owner’s personality and even his heart.

• In the business, you must carry a thick skin. Do not take it emotionally but take it personally and use these criticisms as your guide for necessary change.

• If you need help, seek help. Acknowledge that we cannot just rely solely on our own judgment and expertise. Seek consultation from other experts to help amplify your business.

• Go local with a heart. Check what local produce and ingredients available in your community and bring it to your table. This will attract customers, servings good food that reminds them of a good story of the community. In this way, you are also helping small businesses of your local community.

• Declutter. Try to maximize the available space of your restaurant but do not place unnecessary clutter.

• Consult with a feng shui consultant. They could help you guide on maximizing your space to bring good energy and an inviting vibe.

• Connect with locals using social media marketing. Maximize the use of Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and video content platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo.

• In Restaurant of the Edge (ROTE) also shares food photography techniques that you can incorporate into your food blogging.

• You can learn how to redecorate your space, and gain ideas especially if you want your own restaurant or café in the future.

• Delegate of work is important. You do not want to feel tired and exhausted because of doing everything which results in giving a downside impact on your business. In order for your business to grow, you must learn how to let go, trust your teamwork. Teamwork makes your dream work!

• Make your customers have a unique and memorable experience that would keep them coming back (and tag their friends!), using sounds, and visual presentation in food and drink preparation. Something that would make customers take some pictures and flaunt it with their friends.

• ROTE will encourage you to eat fresh local, and sustainable foods.

• In business, we might not be able to question tradition, but you should incorporate your own personality and identity in your business.

• Always serve at least one or two local cuisines and tells the story why it is unique from the rest. Do not alienate your customers by not serving local-inspired cuisine.

• To give additional flair, do not be afraid to upcycle what you already have.

People do travel to eat, and here are the next destinations that we should consider next time we can able to travel.

Marsaxlokk, Malta

As a tourist destination, Marsaxlokk is popular for a daily open-air market, offering a selection of the finest fish restaurants on the island, for the peaceful walks around the coast and harbor, as well as for its secluded and untainted swimming zones. Locals enjoy the nightlife especially in Summer when you can walk the promenade, grabbing an ice cream as you go and letting the sea breeze cool off the typical Summer heat.

In this episode, a soccer star’s Malta fish café is fading until the experts give it color with cuisine and design reflecting the island’s eclectic culture.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong's enchanting neighborhoods and islands offer a sensory feast. You may find yourself swaying along on a historic double-decker tram, cheering with the hordes at the city-center horse races, or simply gazing out at the glorious harbor. What most visitors don't immediately realize is that over 70% of Hong Kong is mountains and sprawling country parks, some also home to geological and historical gems. Escape the city limits on one of the world’s smoothest transport systems and spend your day wandering in a Song-dynasty village, hiking on a deserted island or kayaking among volcanic sea arches.

In this episode, a cafe in a scenic Hong Kong fishing village Tai O resembles a gift shop without shoppers. The solution: rebranding, a taster menu, and a lot of feng shui.

Tai O is home to the Tanka people, a community of fisherfolk who’ve built their houses on stilts above the tidal flats of Lantau Island for generations. These unusual structures are interconnected, forming a tightly knit community that literally lives on the water. Their enchanting world is a photographer's paradise.

The manually operated drawbridge that spans the narrow creek dividing the town replaced a rope-drawn ‘ferry’ that operated for over 85 years.

Tobermory, Canada

Tobermory is almost surrounded by water - Lake Huron on one side and Georgian Bay on the other. It is a naturalist haven, having 2 national parks - Fathom Five National Marine Park and the Bruce Peninsula National Park - close by.

Tobermory is renowned for its natural setting, it is a photographer’s paradise. There are miles of forest - with tall pines and cedars. The majestic cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment carve its way into Tobermory along the Georgian Bay coast - there is nothing more breath-taking than standing on a rock outcropping - towering 200' above the sea green waters of Georgian Bay!

In his episode, the team takes a harborside bar and grill from foundering to fabulous with a fresh Caribbean menu and a sleek tiki patio style.

Costa Rica

If marketing experts could draw up an ideal destination, Costa Rica might be it. The 'rich coast' has earned its name and stands apart from its Central American neighbors on the cutting edge of so many trends: surfing, farm-to-table restaurants, and sustainable tourism. Developing infrastructure is balanced by green energy such as wind and hydro. One of the world's most biodiverse countries, with half a million species – from insects to the giant anteaters that devour them – it also protects one-quarter of its wildlands through law.

In this episode, the experts resuscitate a flailing seafood restaurant (located in Playas del Coco) by turning up the vibrance with healthy local flavors.

Austria

Over centuries, the Habsburgs channeled immense wealth into the fine arts and music, collecting palaces the way others do stamps. You’ll still feel their cultural reverberations in Austria today – be it watching Lipizzaner stallions prance at the Spanish Riding School or crossing the Hofburg to eyeball Rubens masterpieces in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, or Klimt and Schiele at the Museums Quartier. The work of classical pop stars such as Mozart, Strauss, Mahler, Haydn, and Schubert echo as loudly as ever at lavishly gilded concert halls, and music festivals like Salzburg Festival and Bregenzer Festspiele are staged against uplifting lakeside or mountain backdrops

In this episode, an empty restaurant in the Austrian Alps features a global menu that's all over the place. To survive, it needs more regional fare — and more cowbell.

St. Lucia

St Lucia is in the business of creating lasting first impressions: visitors to the island are greeted by the unforgettable sight of the Piton Mountains, which are fringed by coral reefs, sandy shores, and swaying palms as they rise majestically from the rolling surf.

In this last episode, a unique regional dish and a thoughtful rebuild elevate a bereft St. Lucia bolt-hole into a chic shack with an ambiance to match its idyllic view.

Aside from restaurant and business makeover, ROTE also features local artists, farmers, entrepreneurs, and local creators during each episode.

The restaurateur Nick Liberato generally refocusing each establishment and chef Dennis Prescott revitalizing their menus, designer Karin Bohn is on hand to overhaul them aesthetically. Their energetic positivity, relentlessly supporting and affirming each other and everyone they met.

The trio might not be Gordon Ramsay, however sometimes three heads are better than one.

Be warn and prepare some tissue papers as most of the tears are simple gratitude as owners walk back into a restaurant that has been completely redecorated for free.

Nowadays, people travel to eat. But due to the global pandemic, this passion is now put on hold.

Don’t worry!

Watch Restaurants on the Edge on Netflix and dream on your next destination with great mouth-watering food.

Season 2 is coming soon!

  1. I binged the whole season in a few days and I'm so happy there will be a second season! The show combines three things I love: travel, food and make-overs. I love your list of lessons from the show, I think a lot of their advice is universally applicable. But the best thing were the amazing landscapes, views and food porn ;)

I do agree that a chunk of a successful restaurant is how the own infuses the local decor and vibes into each aspect of the restaurant be it the cuisines or the decor or the theme or the story telling or the employment of the local people . this aspect does pay a very vital rome indeed.

This post is a welcome relief from Masterchef that people fondly talk about and although that show is great but I would always wonder what about other shows which are amazing from FnB point of view. The bullet points mentioned at the start of the blog post are very informative and they summarise the learnings from the show very well. Many a times, the hesitation and problems faced by bed and Breakfast owners are quite similar to the points addressed early on. So I guess your blog post is relevant to wider audience and deserves appreciation! Kudos!!

  63. What an incredible show to watch. I love the fact that it combines travel, food and business tips to turn around business. Having a restaurant in a location which offers great views is such an advantage in itself. But unless that uniqueness is cashed on by driving in revenue it is useless and difficult to sustain.Taking the right decisions and understanding customer needs is the key and hence I find this show such a great idea. The locations showcased here are so pretty.

  78. I watched the Hong Kong episode and I was so shocked on how cluttered the place was! Also, I didn't think they were satisfied with how the girl cooks but the couple seemed to be eager and enthusiastic in growing their business. It's really admirable! As for the Malta episode, I think the guy was a famous, well-off goalkeeper so I'd love if they'd feature more struggling restaurants in the future.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, the good thing about this show is they featured different status of owners. There's one who is a famous goalkeeper but (quite a loser) in restaurant business, there's a family who owns a (almost) a shack restaurant (St. Lucia episode) but situated in a gorgeous location. And the experts helped them fairly.

  82. Very cool! I am a big foodie but hadn't yet heard of this show! Love that it ties the destination in with an exploration in the local cuisine. Adding it to my list to watch next!

  83. I really liked restaurants on the Edge. Restaurant industry is also bleeding currently and we still don't know what will be the #newnormal norms in the post Corona World. I wish everything get settles down soon!

  85. That sounds pretty cool, just the idea of it. These restaurants sound amazing in terms of their setting (I love places with a view) but its a pity that they are failing because of bland food or some missing ingredient of success. So happy that the show helps them identify the change required and pick their business up. Restaurants business can be hard, and asking for expert help or even feedback from your customers can go a long way and making improvements and turning things around!
