A Girl in the Blue Dress | How I Upcycle Old Duvet Cover

Upcycle Old Duvet Cover, sustainable fashion

Hello everyone!

Time flies so fast and now we are starting to enjoy the spring season here in VIC, Australia. We are still under the second wave of restriction and waiting for other updates this coming weekend whether the regional areas of Victoria will start to ease the restriction (or not).

Not whining nor complaining either. But I admit that I am missing our road trips and weekend travel and discovering new places here in Victoria.

As regional Victoria is still under the Stage 3 lockdown for 6-weeks, I managed to keep myself busy and productive. Have so much on my plate and sometimes feel frustrating coz I want to do them all at once!

I still have many pending travel-related blog posts on my computer waiting to be processed.
And the good thing about travel content is that it is always an evergreen content. It never (almost) get old, or should I say only needs a few bits of updates after a few years.

What I am trying to say is that this restriction is somewhat beneficial for myself coz I can do creative things that I truly missed back then.

Aside from making homemade masks, I’ve been enjoying my other upcycling projects such as transforming our old duvet cover (apparently Aussies call them as doona) into a wearable dress!

As much as possible, I am keeping my philosophy of ONLY spending on dresses that I believe is worth investing, and not buying new outfits because mainstream fashion websites say so.

(but if someone sends me brand new FREE clothes then, of course, I will accept them!)

I was clearing out our closets when I found several old duvet covers. Apparently, since we moved into the new house, we also changed our beds which means we can’t use the old ones coz they don’t fit anymore. Especially the kids when we bought them bigger beds, leaving the single size duvet and fitted sheets stored in our laundry closets.

They are still in good condition, and also I don’t have the heart to dispose of them all.

So I decided to keep them all, and slowly upcycle them. After all, this will keep me occupied while in lockdown 😊

And that’s how my duvet cover to dress transformation begun. In this blog, I’ll share with you the first duvet that I’ve made. Surprisingly, I made two dresses! Yey!

The duvet cover is in Queen Size, one side in plain bright pink, and the other side is color blue with prints.

Today, let’s talk about this blue ruffled dress transformation.

I enjoyed transforming this duvet cover fabric coz they are lightweight and easy to sew (even you use hand-sewing). It is soft making the sewing experience really amazing. This print reminds me of aboriginal prints and rarely that I’ve seen aboriginal prints here in Victoria. Maybe because the original prints (as I’ve checked online) are quite expensive.

Making the ruffles for the skirt is a little tedious, but hard work pays off. See how interesting it looks now that the fabric makes that gorgeous waves.

You can watch the vlog below (and some storytime)

And here’s the look after the transformation!

Took me 4 days of the sewing process (no reason to be in a rush!). This is the dress using the other half of the duvet cover (and soon will blog about the other half!).

Ruffles are my all-time obsession for dresses. Ruffles are fun, romantic, lady-like, and always makes the dress more interesting.

On the 5th day is where I did this photoshoot in our bedroom’s balcony. Trees are starting to grow their leaves and I cannot wait to see them bloom! Obviously, my background will be covered with lots of green!

I am also considering adding more plants to our balcony in preparation for the summer season. Maybe adding some hanging flowering plants here and there, and add a small coffee table and wicker chair, to enjoy the view while having tea. What do you think?

And of course, I wear my new dress when I visited Kmart to get some of my craft supplies!

Kmart is now well-stocked (thank goodness!) compared to previous months where shelves are almost empty. They also got decent craft supplies, perfect for keeping us Victorians occupied while in isolation.

What do you think of my duvet transformation? Would you like to see the pink one?
