Yellow Belle Dress | Upcycled Fitted-Sheet Dress

Hello Internet!

And here I am for another upcycling shenanigan.

Pardon me but I just got a lot of time in my hands (thanks for the pandemic), and heaps of materials to keep me occupied.

We are still under restrictions here in Victoria, and I guess this situation will go on under the COVID vaccine is available. That will be one of the items in my Santa’s wish list, hahaha.

Another old sheet, another dress.

A perfect opportunity to upcycle since I can’t even visit my favorite op shops for a little charity shopping. And even though KMART got lots of clothes on special, they don’t fit my style either.

This time, I am using my old fitted sheet, together with this sole pillowcase (I wonder what happened to the other pair?).

The fabric still looks nice and still good to turn into a daywear dress.
This fitted sheet is made of cotton and fitted to a single-king size bed.

Then I did this manual labor of unstitching the elastics. Took me a couple of hours to finish, and I intend to keep the elastic because it still looks great and can be used for my other project.

After hours of unstitching, and cleaning the excess threads, I started to cut the fabric using my DIY pattern for the dress. I also found this extra fabric that I used as inner-lining for the upper part of my dress.

Then it’s sewing time! While doing so, I was watching the latest Season of Lucifer, and I am enjoying his character, although I admit that Season 3 is not my favorite season.

Let me know if you like this Netflix show, or not.

Here is the final dress from scratch!

I managed to finish this dress in just two days without distractions. Maybe because I am already getting used to my sewing machine, and the familiarity of the pattern and the fabric. The dress is super comfortable, screams summer (actually!), and I managed to create a hairbow, face mask, and big scrunchie for this dress.

Then I realized that this look reminds me of the yellow dress + the red rose of Belle (from Beauty and the Beast). I could not help but smile at the idea.

Which made me think of the story.

Belle is tired of her same lifestyle living in the same provincial town. She loves reading books, which triggers her to dream more and experience what the books are feeding her thoughts. Well, I wouldn’t blame her for that though. But somehow, she shouldn’t express her discussed living a provincial life, because if she only lives in the year 2020, I bet she will be wishing every night to go back to her same old provincial town in isolation and live a quiet lifestyle.

Unlike Belle, I don’t have Stockholm Syndrome.

And unlike Belle, I chose the countryside lifestyle, over my previous life in the concrete jungle.

Did I regret it? Sometimes, I miss a sprinkle of it. But never regret my choice.

I am happier, relax, stress-free, have a loving husband, and now have a lot of time to enjoy my passion, and share my upcycling projects with you!

I love classic Disney movies coz it gives me an opportunity to be a kid again, but never forget or brushed-off the reality of life. I am a grown-up, you know.

Speaking of reality, wearing a facemask is still a must here in Victoria, and there is no clear vision as to when are we can freely show our smile to everybody unless the COVID vaccine is available.

Our restrictions are now slightly eased, meaning as residents of Victoria, we can now travel to all Victorian towns and stay overnight, but still following the basic safety precautions, like wearing the mask, sanitizing, social distancing, etc. It wasn’t that bad actually, but our options are still limited.

Many countries start to open their borders to Australians, but the Australian government still firm on the international travel ban for their people. As a Philippine passport carrier, I can travel out of Australia, but there is no assurance (as of now) that they will allow me to come back.

So I rather stay here in our Victorian home and just enjoy what we have for now.

I am so glad that I finally show this upcycled dress! I know this isn’t like those dresses you can see on Preview magazine or from your Instagram feed, but this is something, and the rest of the upcycled dresses made me proud wearing.

What do you think of this dress?

  13. I wish I am as skilled as you when it comes to upcycling! I love the type of yellow of this dress - this is probably my favorite yellow. I've been really into upcycling these days but more on home interiors. I don't own a lot of clothes since I move a lot but I will definitely try to do it with some clothes that I'd like to donate. Thanks for sharing, Blair!

My project is to prolong the life of each fabric. Good thing that most of the duvet/bedsheets that I've got are still in good condition.
