I remember my Dad gifted me my first (and maybe the only) Care Bear plush toy, and it was Cheer Bear.
Back in the days it was one of the coolest toys a kid can have, and Cheer Bear was my regular companion, and it has a special place next to my bed.
When we moved into a new location, I don’t know what happened to my Cheer Bear. Maybe it was lost in transit just like the rest of our childhood toys.
When I found this second-hand Care Bear duvet sheet from one of my ‘pay-it-forward gigs’ I felt that this will be a fun project, another upcycled fashion piece while bringing back those happy memories of my childhood.
I decided to unstitch the whole duvet sheet and turn it into a fun spring outfit!
Using the patterns that I have, I started tracing the pattern onto the fabric, and the rest will be ready for making puff sleeves and volumized skirts. I made the silhouette just as simple as it is because the whole fun Care Bear prints will do them justice.
My cat enjoys interrupting my sewing projects!
And here’s the final look!
I made a couple of scrunchies to pair with this dress. There are still fabric remnants that I save for the next DIY project. After many years, I found an identical Cheer Bear from Kmart Australia, made from recycled plastic bottles. How cool is that?!
History of Care Bears
Originally created for the greeting cards that became ubiquitous throughout the 1980s by artist Elena Kucharik, the Care Bears found their true calling as plush teddy bears who eventually inspired a TV series and three feature films.
There were 10 original Care Bears to collect, each with its own color and ‘belly badge’ designed to show its character: Bedtime Bear, Birthday Bear, Cheer Bear, Friend Bear, Funshine Bear, Good Luck Bear, Grumpy Bear, Love-a-Lot Bear, Tenderheart Bear, and Wish Bear. This, combined with later bears and ‘cousins including pigs, horses, and cats meant Care Bears dominated Christmas lists in the mid-80s.
The Care Bears had five relaunches from 1991 to 2019, but for the fans, nothing beats the nostalgic appeal of the original 10.
The Care Bear brand keeps on evolving and made several collaborations with both lifestyle and fashion brands. LA-based luxury streetwear brand Teddy Fresh has released a new clothing collaboration with Care Bears.
The Teddy Fresh x Care Bears collection includes 30 pieces of clothing for men and women that combine classic streetwear silhouettes with images of iconic characters. Drawing inspiration from the original 1980s Care Bears animated series, this collaboration comes in a dreamy range of colors and all-over prints that pay tribute to the franchise

I had so much fun making this dress, and I still have enough fabric remnants that I can use for at least 2 pieces of an outfit.
