Lady in Red

Lady in Red - sustainable fashion by Blair Villanueva
Fashion is self-expression.

A form of communication that speaks, and sometimes even louder than our own words.
The clothes we put on for the day tell us what we feel (and sometimes think) of ourselves, or in a certain situation, including our personality.

For today’s fashion blog, I would like to share with you this red dress that I recently made using the old textile I bought from my favorite op shop  - the Friends of Hillside Lodge Op Shop located in Korumburra, VIC.

If only we are free to attend parties and gathering (with no COVID restrictions), this red dress would be a perfect outfit for the marquee, during last week’s Melbourne Cup.

Well, it doesn’t matter coz, I am here dressing up for myself and enjoying every moment of it.

When I bought this 2-meter textile, I have no idea what kind of design I can make with it. So it has been sitting on my textile shelves for months until the inspiration comes in.

crimson rosella

Meet my fashion inspiration – the dearest crimson (red) rosella.

The crimson rosella is native to eastern and southeastern Australia, where it inhabits open forests, woodlands, gardens as well as parks. Its wild diet consists many of native grass seeds, herbs, fruits, and flowering buds. No wonder this little fella has been visiting my humble porch garden and snacking some of my pig-face plants.

I often see them living in the park across my house, and I always feel delighted watching the way they move. Seeing them visiting my porch recently, made me think that I am doing something good that attracts their attention.

In honor of my little birdy friends, I made this dress that reminds me how grateful I am for being surrounded by nature and skills that makes me find my purpose.

This little embroidered chained handbag is made in Italy, which I also luckily found from the op shop.

My bejeweled headpiece was customized by myself using the rhinestone beads that I sourced from Spotlight Store in Traralgon VIC.

Although this dress isn’t like the red dress that Chris De Burgh describes in his song, still it is the red dress that I can say I am happy to wear, and my husband loves.

What do you think of this dress?! What inspires you to dress up?

  9. Your dress reminds me so much of that spanish/mexican dance. The one with the fan and the girls have their hair bunned on the side? :) You have skills, dear.
