Werribee Open Range Zoo – Safari Experience

Werribee Open Range Zoo – Safari Experience
If you like to treat yourself to a safari experience, you don’t need to travel thousands of kilometers all the way to Africa.

Visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo Australia is one of the destinations you shouldn’t miss.

Located just a 30-minute drive from Melbourne CBD to Werribee South Victoria, this 225-hectares open savannah is a sanctuary for many wildlife habitats, particularly for those wildlife animals that are becoming extinct.

Managed by Zoos Victoria, a not-for-profit organization is a world-leading zoo-based conservation organization, dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction.

Zoos Victoria will fight wildlife extinction through:

• Innovative, scientifically sound breeding and recovery programs to support critically endangered Victorian, terrestrial, vertebrate species;
• Partnering with the Victorian community to create the world’s most wildlife-friendly society;
• Providing profound zoo-based animal encounters to connect people with wildlife; and
• Strong commercial approaches to secure financial sustainability.

Zoos Victoria also manages Healesville Sanctuary and Melbourne Zoo

As of the latest inventory of Zoos Victoria, there are 360 living animals at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

They also housed several birds such as the emu, brolga, orange-bellied parrot, helmeted guineafowl, plains wanderer, and common ostrich.

RSPCA Koala Ward

Last February 2022 the construction has begun on a $2.55 million veterinary facility at Werribee Open Range Zoo to treat sick and injured koalas and other native wildlife.

The facility will be known as the RSPCA Koala Ward, recognizing a funding partnership between Zoos Victoria and RSPCA Victoria.

The state government is also providing $84 million in funding to transform the Werribee Zoo into a conservation and education destination.

The Koala Ward – which will include two fully equipped surgery rooms and a neonatal room − will provide wildlife experts with greater resources to respond during future extreme weather and emergency events.

Twelve outdoor recovery zones will be built next to the hospital to house injured koalas and other wildlife during their rehabilitation and a large browse plantation at the zoo will provide a critical food source.

Visitors to the zoo will have the opportunity to explore the veterinary facilities during small-group tours and watch wildlife experts undertaking important conservation work.

The RSPCA Koala Ward is scheduled for completion in mid-2022. Source.
