Upcycling is Bespoke

Upcycling is Bespoke
As much as upcycling fashion helps to minimize textile waste and saved materials go to landfills, making new clothes through upcycling is a tedious and labor-intensive kind of work. The time I spent on planning the designs in my head based on the materials I had on hand, including the constant battle of making sure that fabrics would work together according to plans are all truly time-consuming, and sometimes frustrations come in.

However, it is all part of the process. I always choose to trust the process (and my guts), adding with lots of patience and constant research to come up with a unique piece that I could proudly wear.

It’s been a long time since I bought brand-new clothes from the shop, and would you believe that I never feel I missed something?

I have so much fun with my upcycling lifestyle, and although I don’t know my end game yet (or if I got one), it doesn’t matter because I finally found a passion that makes me happy and alive, and where I can freely express myself.

So, for today’s upcycling blog, I would like to share with you how I turned this secondhand jumper (formerly owned by my daughter Ms. C), into an eccentric dress. Watching so many Japanese street-style vlogs on YouTube has brought so much inspiration recently, and I was thrilled to integrate those learned ideas and designs into my upcycling journey.

If I wasn’t mistaken, this Kmart brand jumper was bought 3 years ago by her. However, as she blossomed into a young adult, this jumper wouldn’t fit her anymore. I kept this for months until I finally managed to sit down and work on it using the materials I collated over months.

Here are some of the materials I’ve collated.

I’ve got those fabric remnants, and some balls of wool from my previous craftworks. Grandma also gifted me a bag of maroon wool that she bought from the op shop, which surprisingly has a similar color palette to the jumper. I reckon these materials will be suitable. I started working on the design, and indeed I made a lot of mess. After two weeks of patiently sewing and occasionally poking my fingers with needles, the dress is ready!

BTW, this pair of boots was also upcycled by me using the rhinestone beads that I got from Spotlight.

What do you think of this dress?

Do you like my cat? Her name is Sadie!
