The latest hit series on Hulu/FX/Disney+, 'Shōgun', vividly portrays the tumultuous and violent era of Japan's feudal history with a gripping sense of terror. This new epic television drama not only thrills us with its excitement and intrigue but also inspires a deeper interest in Japanese culture, including the traditional attire of kimonos for both men and women.
One of the Japanese fashion designers that we personally admire is Jotaro Saito.
Jotaro Saito, who began his career by designing both Western attire and kimonos, chose to focus exclusively on kimonos at the age of 27. His experience in Western fashion design significantly influenced his kimono creations. Drawing inspiration from 'street' styles, Saito embarked on crafting contemporary kimono designs that appeal to the modern, fashion-aware clientele.
Saito's collections, showcased regularly at Tokyo Fashion Week, are crafted through the traditional and labor-intensive hand-drawn yuzen dyeing technique. These ensembles feature unique, multi-layered designs that are distinctly Japanese in style.
