Hey there! Did you know that Japan's autumn colors (koyo) are a hidden gem of the country? While cherry blossoms in spring get a lot of love, Japan also puts on an equally amazing show in autumn. From late September to early December, Japan becomes a breathtaking canvas of fiery reds, brilliant scarlets, and regal gold, thanks to the Japanese maple and ginkgo trees, as well as other beautiful plants like the Japanese rowan and larch. There are also many lovely autumn flower fields and gardens to feast your eyes on. November is considered the best month to view the autumn colors in most parts of Japan.

The way the autumn leaves change in Japan is just breathtaking! It's no wonder, considering that nearly 70 percent of the country is covered in forests with lots of deciduous trees.

Koyo, just like Sakura (cherry blossoms), is deeply intertwined with Japan’s history, culture, and identity. For centuries, the Japanese people have been taking an annual pilgrimage to mountains, gorges, and temples to witness the beautiful display of colors in autumn. This tradition is so cherished that it has its own special term, momijigari. While koyo literally means to ‘hunt’ the autumn leaves, it actually signifies ‘seeking out and admiring’ them.

Learn more about koyo below and find out how you can begin your own momijigari experience.
