Walking is good - and you should try to get your 10,000 steps in whenever possible - but sometimes you can walk too much. It happens while you travel; you walk everywhere, and before you know it, 30,000 steps are on the clock. That’s great for your health but awful for your feet.

Many travel experiences are ruined by chronically sore feet, so what can you do to stop this?

Here are some quick and simple tips to look after your feet while ensuring you still get a great travel experience:

Take public transport for longer journeys
You must strike a balance between walking and taking public transport. You don’t want to get the local bus or train everywhere, but you also can’t walk for the entire day. The best balance is to take public transport for longer journeys. It gives your feet a much-needed rest, so they shouldn’t be as sore. You’ll still walk loads, but it’s the difference between doing 10,000 and 20,000 steps a day.

Also, getting public transport when it’s dark is another good tip. Walking in the dark is incredibly unsafe, especially for young women traveling alone. Don’t be afraid to get a taxi or hop on a bus at night, even for shorter journeys.

Wear footwear with arch support
Wanna know something crazy? Most of the shoes or trainers you wear have terrible arch support - and it’s even worse when you travel. Why? You’re more likely to wear things like sandals or thongs, which generally have even worse arch support. Your feet are under extra strain, so you get a lot of pain on the base and around the heel.

Correct this by getting some good walking trainers with excellent arch support. You’ll also find sandals with high arches built into them, offering amazing support for your feet. The right footwear makes a world of difference and means every step is less painful.

Bring a small massage ball with you
In a perfect world, you’d get back to your hotel or Airbnb after a day of travel and enjoy a lovely foot massage. That’s not always possible! However, you can give yourself a little massage by bringing a simple massage ball with you on your trip. You’ll find small balls with little rubber spikes to rub along the soles of your feet - or a hard lacrosse-style ball if you don’t like the spiky bits.

Either way, rolling your foot on one of these balls at the end of the day will relieve so much tension. You break up any muscle knots, which helps you feel a lot more relaxed. They’ll be less sore the next day, and these balls are so small you can fit them in a handbag!

In just a few simple steps, you’ll have more comfortable feet when you travel. Will you still walk a lot? Yes - and that’s to be encouraged! Walking is great for your health and helps you see so much of the areas you’re visiting. These ideas will help you cut down on your steps slightly while looking after your feet. Overall, it brings a far better travel experience!
