Visiting, especially staying in an old convent, was unexpected and wasn’t in our plan, but I’m glad we did. Our two-night experience was memorable, and I learned the amazing story behind this beautiful accommodation.
Located in the heart of New Zealand's breathtaking Fiordland, Te Anau Lodge offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern luxury inside the 7-acre property.
The building used to be an old convent from 1936, and truly impressive as it stands as a testament to timeless architecture. The lodge has been meticulously restored, ensuring that each of the 9 rooms exudes historic elegance while offering the comforts of modern amenities.
Usually during our travels, we don’t book our accommodation in advance because we love the idea of staying in a place where our time drags as. Luckily, Te Anau Lodge has a vacancy available for us during that day.
Despite its tranquil seclusion, Te Anau Lodge is conveniently located a mere 15-minute walk from the town center, and guests can enjoy the proximity to local activities while returning to the quietude of the lodge's expansive grounds.
The lodge's size allows for a level of interaction with the hosts and staff that is both personal and genuine. Our stay includes free full buffet breakfasts, and beverages (except alcohol of course), which is amazing.
Te Anau Lodge is undeniably breathtaking and doesn't just provide a place to stay during our long road trips. Guests can partake in a game of giant garden chess, relax by the pond on a two-person swing seat, or bask in the privacy of the gazebo. The Lounge Library, with its cozy fireplace, is the perfect spot to unwind with a book or enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the views of the estate.
Each room at Te Anau Lodge has been designed to maximize comfort and aesthetic appeal. Our room (The Sacristy) was on the ground floor with a good view, and had its own private toilet and shower, along with complimentary toiletries.

I think this is an old confession box, and now turned into a gorgeous décor near the reception area. Its architecture is undeniably impressive.

Guests can have free access to its library, and lounge in its gorgeous leather couch while enjoying the beautiful outdoor view.
According to their website, Te Anau Lodge offers several types of rooms, and this Fiordland Carriage is one of the highlights. It is a converted and restored 1912 Fiordland Carriage from the Taieri Gorge Railway in Dunedin and transferred to Te Anau Lodge property in 2017. It is one of the most private accommodations, (unfortunately wasn’t available during our stay) and I wish to experience it next time we visit the town.
