My Thoughts After a Year Participating in VIC Container Deposit Scheme

My Thoughts After a Year Participating in VIC Container Deposit Scheme
Back in November 2023, the VIC State Government introduced its container deposit scheme (that many Victorians have been waiting for years!). As a new Victorian, I was excited to participate in its pilot run. On that day, I insisted my husband drive me to the collection center and return my eligible glass and aluminum bottles, which I had collected for weeks.

My receipts during my first day returning my eligible empty bottles back in November 2023. I recycled 206 containers/bottles during my first day!

And as of this writing, I have returned and recycled 2337 containers.

According to the ABC Australia news, Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme has recycled more than 900 million containers in 12 months, resulting in $90 million in rewards!

That is massive, and I’m thrilled knowing that I took part in this great initiative to recycle our containers and keep them away from landfills.

The CDS app helps me to track how many containers I’ve collected and returned, including how much I’ve got from those containers. I am truly pleased knowing that I can get something from the trash at home, and the containers I’ve collected during my morning walks.

My only regret is not starting early on before their launch, just like what our local bloke Beau Miles did.

However, I figured that I could still collect empty containers at every opportunity I got, such as during my friend's house parties, my morning walks, including during my local and interstate trips (and yes, I carry back our empty Coca-Cola bottles after our trip for the sake of my principle).

My husband is even supportive of my little hobby that he sometimes collects empty cans from his rich mates’ joint.

However, road trips sometimes quite give me anxiety each time I see several empty containers lying around the highway, and how I wish I could stop and collect them all (which I can’t coz that could be dangerous).

I wish that they consider expanding the type of containers eligible such as jars, juice boxes, and wine bottles however, I heard that at this moment the State Gov’t has no plans for that, nor even increase the refund offered (currently 10 cents per container) in order to align with refunds paid internationally.

Just imagine if they increased the refund offer to at least 20 cents then me and many others will be more fully motivated to participate in this recycling scheme.

Although in spite of this flourishing success, still, many people prefer to throw away their empty containers of beer and sodas on the side of the road, because just like what my sister-in-law said, ‘it isn’t worth it’.

But I don’t care what other people say (including hers), I still continue collecting and participating in this bloody good program because it works.

Every small act counts.
