Today marks another milestone for many Filipinos worldwide as we celebrate the winning of our beloved queen Ms. Catriona Gray for this year’s Miss Universe 2018. We are so happy that the crown is now back in the Philippines, for the 4th time!
Her gracious pose, personality, and charm have captured many of us worldwide, and we know she deserves the title and the crown.
To commemorate her glory, I managed to compile everything of her dresses and winning gowns that she used during the pageant competition in Thailand.
The lead Filipino designer of her team Mak Tumang had proudly and selflessly shared to the Filipinos the behind the scene photos of Ms. Catriona Gray’s gown.
ADARNA: The Blazing Siren
The ‘Ibong Adarna’ is a mythological pulchritudinous bird that could change in several fascinating guises. Its enchanting voice can enable complete healing to anyone who hears it. Some artists liken it to the mythological Phoenix where it recurrently regenerates itself by arising amidst a spectacle of flames and candescence. This makes it a fitting symbol of resilience, rising, and rebirth.Catriona has a resilient, tenacious, and unwavering spirit. Her voice is truly captivating literally and figuratively. She uses it to influence, advance her timely causes, and both melt and heal hearts. Her willpower and burning passion drive her to make every Filipino proud in whatever she does. She is the blazing Adarna! Watch her rise in glory along with our hopes and dreams for our beloved country: the Philippines! – Mak Tumang, source
Inspired from the Philippine Adarna Bird, Phoenix & Mikimoto Crown
Catriona Gray’s fitting session at Mak Tumang’s atelier
We are wondering if this is a sign of her winning since her dress was also inspired by the Mikimoto pearls in the Miss Universe crown!
Next is the dress she worn during the coronation day!
MAYON: Fiery and Lovely Perfection
Today, Catriona is coming home. She is celebrating her roots – she is celebrating Albay! The prominent and iconic Mayon Volcano is the penultimate inspiration for this creation. It is dubbed as the ‘perfect cone because of its symmetric conical form. Folk tales have it, that it was named after the mythological heroine ‘Daragang Magayon’ (Beautiful Lady). Despite its pulchritude is the fact that it is the most active volcano in the Philippines erupting numerous times in the past half a millennium. Catriona can be considered the modern-day Daragang Magayon. She embodies the Filipina’s beauty, intelligence, and burning passion. This lady is definitely on fire! Watch her erupt right before your very eyes and let the lava of grace, goodness, and hope flow. - Mak Tumang
Every dress that she worn carries a symbolic meaning of her roots in the Philippines. Every dress and design comes with a meaningful story of braveness, compassion, beauty, resilience, and humbleness.
Catriona Gray’s National Costume
Her national costume is inspired by the three regions of the Philippines - The Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Her handmade brass accessories, the T'boli headpiece, and brass belt are all from Mindanao. The bodysuit with Pintado's pattern is from the Visayas, and the huge circular lantern design piece symbolizes the Luzon region. A Filipino designer Jearson Demavivas designed her costume. The new queen was very hands-on in designing her costume with the help of her peers Carlos Buendia, and Jojo Bragais.
Her boots is totally slay the stage, and this is definitely heavy!
Catriona Gray's press day outfits
She also donned other dresses designed by Filipino designers + accessories all Philippine-made!
