COCO’s Exciting Collaboration with Innis & Gunn - Project Ampersand

COCO’s Exciting Collaboration with Innis & Gunn - Project Ampersand
Artist: David Mach | Artwork: Chocollage | Flavour: Rum & Coconut

Edinburgh based artisan chocolatier COCO is proud to launch three new limited edition chocolate bars as part of Project Ampersand, an exciting collaboration with Innis & Gunn. The Scottish beer brewery challenged four like-minded Scottish lifestyle brands to create limited edition, unique creations inspired by ‘The Original’ barrel-ageing process. We collaborated with three talented independent artists who each created original artworks that we have showcased on the packaging of three limited-edition chocolate bars.

Artist: David Mach | Artwork: Chocollage | Flavour: Rum & Coconut

Renowned Scottish artist David Mach is known internationally for his large-scale collages, sculpture and installations. David’s design features an angel sitting on beer barrels to represent a “heavenly combination of beer and chocolate”, which he feels best represents the collaboration. To pay homage to the flavours used by Innis & Gunn, the ‘Chocollage’ bar has ingredients of the brewing process arranged across its wrapper.

Artist: Tom Pigeon | Artwork: Barrel | Flavour: Caramel & Vanilla

Creative studio Tom Pigeon was founded in 2014 by Kirsty Thomas. Specialised in prints, jewellery and stationery, the studio welcomes creative commissions such as Project Ampersand. Tom pigeon repurposed elements from the barrels and barrel-ageing process in the design of the piece including the metal fixings, wooden staves and circles. The colour palette is inspired by the tones and textures of the wood, the painted ends of vintage barrels, with reference to the caramel and malt aromas of the beer and chocolate.

Artist: Chris Turner | Artwork: Cubist | Flavour: Smoked Coffee

The founder of Turner Furniture was inspired by the ‘barrel into beer’ process, which involves toasting the barrel pieces before immersing and maturating in the beer in order to achieve the desired flavour. Chris based the design of the Smoked Coffee Dark Chocolate wrapper on Turner Furniture’s signature geometric parquetry style. The result is a unique design that celebrates everything that’s inside the barrel, in an abstract narrative made of different woods that reflect both the beer and the chocolate.

Calum Haggerty, COCO Managing Director, said: “Project Ampersand is a platform to showcase creativity and unique pieces of craftsmanship. We have particularly enjoyed collaborating with a like-minded independent Scottish company like Innis & Gunn. Each artist has been inspired to create something totally unique that wouldn’t exist without the input and inspiration from the Innis & Gunn barrel ageing and brewing processes.

“Project Ampersand has given four leading lifestyle brands in Scotland a creative platform to tell the story of The Original. We took them through the processes we use to create the beer that started it all for Innis & Gunn and asked them to apply elements to their own original or best-loved products. COCO is much more than just another chocolatier. Through their ‘Art of Chocolate’ platform, the team at COCO utilise their wrappers and external packaging as a platform for independent artists to showcase their work in a truly unique way.  The collaborative process and working with COCO have been fantastic and we’re thrilled to be able to showcase our brand and beers in such a different way,” said David Moule, Senior Brand Manager at Innis & Gunn.
