As an Asian (I'm a Filipino), learning properly on how to cook rice (including the basic fried rice) is a milestone achievement on our way to being independent and adulthood. That's why we learned to cook rice using our saucepan (or kaldero!) and measuring it using your finger.
You are one step ahead when you can afford to buy that awesome rice cooker!
We cook it with the right precision and perfection, making sure that we did it right to get (at least) a nod from our tiger parentals.
So I wouldn't be surprised if even the famous YouTuber Nigel Ng known as Uncle Roger felt disgusted and disapproval the way others cook their rice.
Remember, before you enjoy that bowl of rice, thousands of farmers did many sacrifices to plant, maintain, and harvest those grains, and I couldn't blame many Asian hearts felt broken realizing how many people cook it with disrespect.
Yes, we learned to respect our rice and other food and it is disrespectful to let those grains of cooked rice be wasted.
In the Philippines, we Filipinos give so much respect that we even built our own RICE MUSEUM!
And kidding aside, I gave my Australian hubby a one-on-one tutorial on how to properly cook the rice (and not wasting a single grain thus, cooking a bowl of good fried rice!).
If your non-Asian partner doesn't know how to do it then better send it to an online class because RICE IS THE KEY TO A GOOD RELATIONSHIP.
Totally laughed when i watched the viral video. It’s so funny. I learned rice like you did, but i use cups and have my own algebraic formula. And, who would reach rice that’s been washed after cooking??????? Hahaha

DeleteYung dati na sa probinsiya pa nakatira at wala pa kami rice cooker, na-experience ko din magsaing using kaldero at sinusukat ang tubig sa daliri ng kamay. At yung fried rice si mama madalas magluto niyan kasi laging madami sobrang sinaing. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is quite tricky using kaldero! My Mom have her rice cooker, but still she prefers kaldero, hahaha only using rice cooker for special occasions.
