Moisturizer or Cleanser: Which Comes First?

Olay Regenerist Whip Moisturizer
From cleansers to sun protection, here is what works through the order of skincare application and set you up to optimize your options.

1.Cleansers

Almost all skin experts will agree cleansing is the first step in any routine. Always starts with cleansing to remove dirt, sweat, dead skin cells, and cosmetic products, like make-up and sunscreen, that can reduce the penetration of these products designed to get through the skin barrier.

Do we really need to cleanse in the morning? It just depends on your skin’s condition.

If you have highly acne, oily skin then best to do another cleanse to remove the barrier of oil that has built up overnight, so whatever you put on will have good penetration.

2.Toners, Essences, and serums

After cleansing and while skin is still damp, you can start applying skincare in order from lightest (almost watery) to heaviest (more creamy/greasy).

Wait until your skin feels ‘dry’ again after applying each one product, so you do not dilute them or cause unexpected reactions by mixing them together.

Products such as toners and essences are designed to further hydrate the skin, something of benefit to those with, particularly dehydrated skin.

Serums are ‘active’ products, comprising either minerals, vitamins, plant or herbal extracts – and this is the step designed to make changes to your skin.

They work together to ensure skin is hydrated and will optimize the function of the products you are applying.

3.Moisturizer

Eye cream is usually applied before moisturizer, but not everyone requires a specialized eye cream. If you have sensitive skin and eyes you might benefit from the gentler formulations in specialized eye creams, but otherwise, you don’t need a special eye cream. Just take your normal skincare sparingly around the orbital bone (but not on the eyelid itself).
Whether you use a moisturizer, face oil, or face balm, ultimately, they all fall into the same category.

The main goal of these products is to hydrate the skin and lock in the moisture. They’re trying to slow down trans-epidermal water loss, which is essentially minimizing dehydration.

Opting for separate day and night moisturizers is an individual preference, but generally, they have the same function. Remember to moisturize your neck and decolletage as well as your face.

4.Sunscreen

Application of sunscreen is non-negotiable during the day. Just think of SPF as that finishing flourish of your skincare routine or the beginning of your make-up. Apply sunscreen after your other skincare has dried and let it dry before you apply make-up so you don’t disturb the protective film or dilute it with other products. There is no truth to the myth that some sunscreens need to interact directly with the skin to ‘activate’ – they are all acting out of the tube.

Olay Regenerist Whip Moisturizer

Olay Regenerist Whip Moisturizer

For moisturizers, one of my recent favorites is the Olay Regenerist Whip. And who would not love this lightweight cream that easily absorbs to the skin, that helps to give that glowing and healthy-looking skin, plus minimize the signs of aging? I love this Olay Renegerist Whip and no wonder I always make sure to have extras each time Chemist Warehouse has a good promotion.

Olay Regenerist Whip is so good that I also used it as my make-up primer and hand cream.

Talk about smart beauty, right?!

  1. I have oily yet sensitive skin so I try to limit the products that I use on my face, which is why I favour Cleanser. Olay is a great brand for skincare products!

    1. Every skin-type is different, that's why finding the right skincare products that suits us is a journey :)

  2. When I was younger, the only essential beauty products then were the cleansing soap, the toner and the moisturizer. Serums grew only in popularity in the latter years. I haven't tried them yet, and pretty surprised you said that toners are for skin rehydration. I've always thought they dry the skin, hence the need for moisturizers. But Micellar water is pretty cool. I've replaced our toners with that.

I'm an Olay user, btw. I'm currently using the Olay foaming cleanser and Total Effects.

  3. Like you, I use moisturizers as primer. I love that Olay is lightweight. Those heavy creams often give me breakouts.

  4. I'm just so lazy putting on a lot of cream or cosmetics on my face. So I always end up having dry and sometimes oily face. I really need patience and consistency if I really want to achieve a smooth face. I've also heard that Olay products are very effective so I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. The use of cleansers and moisturizers are the best. Those serums and essences are optional depending on your skin type.

    1. Aww these are just basic skin care steps! But there are times that whatever steps you follow, as long as it works on you then no reason to switch :)

  6. Thank you for clarifying their uses. I'm not much into skincare. When a product satisfies me, I'd stick to it as I'd hate to shop around for other brands. Coincidentally, my brand is olay.

    1. Yeah, I used to stick to one product too. Olay is one of the best. But I'm open to trying other products that would also suits my skin type, just in case the old one doesn't satisfy me anymore.

  7. To be honest, I am not really into skin products before, but lately I realized that I have to take care of my skin too. Never used a toner, only facial wash and sunblock, after reading this post. you encouraged me to include it on my routine

    1. I started taking care of my skin at the age of 16, and my Mother taught me the basics. Olay was her favorite skincare brand too. No that I reach my 30s, I can see the good result of that journey. I can't wait what will be like in my 40s!
