It was sad news for all Melbournians and for many of us that visited the iconic destination in the city.
The Melbourne Star that rivals the famous London Eye announced last Monday 6th Sept that it would stop lighting up the city skyline after 13-years of intermittent operation, citing the pandemic on top of existing challenges.
It is saddening to realized that many businesses are forced to shut down because of the pandemic. This iconic giant wheel in the Docklands, one of the best iconic attractions in the Southern Hemisphere lost its glow. Interstate and international tourists made up 45 percent of the business, which could not weather the impact of COVID19.
Although I only visited this landmark once, it was a memorable experience that I shared with my husband and his youngest daughter.
Since its opening in 2008, The Melbourne Star serves millions of guests around the world, and although it didn’t escape from occasional controversies, the wheel keeps on moving.
But not until this year, when the management of MB Star Properties Pty Ltd decided it is time to turn off the lights.
During our visit, some of the cabins are open for an aerial glamping experience perfect for any occasions you have in mind. We were thinking of having a date-night experience here but didn’t materialize.
If there were no COVID restrictions, and if only I knew that the Melbourne Star will shut down, I could have pay another visit and enjoy its beauty for one last time.
I reckon that many true-blue Melbournians will miss the amazing beauty that welcomes everyone each nighttime.
There’s no word yet on what will happen to the structure – whether it might be sold to a new owner to continue operating or simply demolished and sold off for scrap.
But IMHO, I hope for the best and wishing that The Melbourne Star will lights-up again under its newest custodian.
Thats so sad :( I have never been to Melbourne but it is always sad when landmarks like this close down.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. They are currently under liquidation, unless someone will take over.
DeleteWow, the scenery up there is stunning at night! I am planning to travel this year and I will definitely add this to my bucket list.
ReplyDeleteYeah gorgeous view! Sadly, Melbourne Star Observation Wheel is now terminated. Although you can still enjoy this gorgeous night view when you are on top of the other iconic buildings
DeleteSo so beautiful the views from the Melbourne star & I wish to be up there too during my travel there then. Cheers Siennylovesdrawing
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that Melbourne Star will be adopted by another company to resume its glory.
DeleteWould love to visit Melbourne, looks like you had an amazing time. So many wonderful things tomdo.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed! Hope we can travel again. With the current restriction here in regional Victoria versus Melbourne, our travel options are quite limited. But we enjoy many regional travel.
DeleteThe Melbourne Star looks just amazingly beautiful - and the views are grand, too.
ReplyDeleteTruly! Thanks dear!
DeleteVery sad, I think there are more other attractions for observation, and the covid-19 situation has a big hit on many travel businesses. I will miss it too! - Knycx Journeying
ReplyDeleteThe COVID hit hurts them a lot, coz majority of their guests are from overseas.
DeleteWow. That looks like such a cool attraction. It is very sad that so many things have had to close down. I hope they are able to have the lights back up and running sometime soon. Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteI agree. Hope that the Melbourne Star wouldn't end-up scraping into pieces and goes into junk piles.
DeleteWow, that is very sad that is it closed. I love the view that you had inside one "pod" (I don't know what you call it). It looks really spacious.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they call it a pod or a cabin. I am now wishing that one day this will be saved by another company.
Deleteit's always sad for me when something closes down. I love similar attraction all over globe and I kinda wish I would have had a ride there in Melbourne
ReplyDeleteThat's true! Hope they wouldn't end-up as metal scraps.
