Why I will miss the iconic Melbourne Star

Why I will miss the iconic Melbourne Star
A tribute blog for the landmark that captures my heart.

It was sad news for all Melbournians and for many of us that visited the iconic destination in the city.
The Melbourne Star that rivals the famous London Eye announced last Monday 6th Sept that it would stop lighting up the city skyline after 13-years of intermittent operation, citing the pandemic on top of existing challenges.

It is saddening to realized that many businesses are forced to shut down because of the pandemic. This iconic giant wheel in the Docklands, one of the best iconic attractions in the Southern Hemisphere lost its glow. Interstate and international tourists made up 45 percent of the business, which could not weather the impact of COVID19.

Although I only visited this landmark once, it was a memorable experience that I shared with my husband and his youngest daughter.

Since its opening in 2008, The Melbourne Star serves millions of guests around the world, and although it didn’t escape from occasional controversies, the wheel keeps on moving.

But not until this year, when the management of MB Star Properties Pty Ltd decided it is time to turn off the lights.

I’m still glad that I visited this place and had an amazing time. We visited back in December 2019 a week after my first arrival here in Australia. It captures the amazing view of the city, and I can imagine it will be a more romantic experience if we visited for a nighttime ride (which costs even more than daytime tickets).

During our visit, some of the cabins are open for an aerial glamping experience perfect for any occasions you have in mind. We were thinking of having a date-night experience here but didn’t materialize.

If there were no COVID restrictions, and if only I knew that the Melbourne Star will shut down, I could have pay another visit and enjoy its beauty for one last time.

The Melbourne Star

I reckon that many true-blue Melbournians will miss the amazing beauty that welcomes everyone each nighttime.

There’s no word yet on what will happen to the structure – whether it might be sold to a new owner to continue operating or simply demolished and sold off for scrap.

But IMHO, I hope for the best and wishing that The Melbourne Star will lights-up again under its newest custodian.

    1. I agree with you. They are currently under liquidation, unless someone will take over.

    1. The COVID hit hurts them a lot, coz majority of their guests are from overseas.

    1. Yeah, they call it a pod or a cabin. I am now wishing that one day this will be saved by another company.
