Benefits of Desexing your Pets

Should I get my pet desexed or breed my pet?

I had this question in my head when our first Siamese cat Smokey arrived in our home back in December 2019. She looks so adorably cute, and I was fantasizing about breeding her and raising her future babies.

However, the reality hit me. Am I ready to raise her future babies? Is Smokey even ready and safe for her well-being?

Without so much thought, we decided for her to be desexed, and it was one of the best decisions we had. No regrets.

Our local council is currently offering a desexing assistance program for our furry pets!

What is Pet Desexing?
Basically, desexing or neutering your pet means surgical removal of the sex hormones. In males it's the removal of testicles, leaving the penis and scrotum intact. In females, the surgery involves the removal of the ovaries and uterus.

Benefits of desexing your pets

Healthy and Happier pets
It is said that desexed or neutered animals are much healthier as compared to the others. They are more likely to suffer from fewer diseases and infections and less likely to show aggression to people.

Longer Life Span
Many research has shown that desexed animals have lived long 460,000 cats and 2.2 million dogs found that spayed cats live 39% longer and spayed dogs live 23% longer than their unspayed counterparts. What else do pet lovers need? Every pet lover wants to keep their pets with them forever.

Reduce Messy Behavior in Heat Cycle
If you got one pet and you don't have its partner things will be going to be messy. They will become very vocal and loud when they will go into heat and start doing urine sprays in every corner of your house or might start to escape and put them at risk of being hit by a car.

Saves Money
You only need to pay once that's too for the surgery only. However, you will save money in the long term by preventing many serious health problems and also saving expenses for offspring.

The disadvantage of desexing your pets

No Breeding
There are no such disadvantages of desexing your pets other than that they won't be able to reproduce. In Victoria State, there are guidelines and procedures on breeding your pets, including licensing.

Loss of Hair & Skin Allergies
Desexing might bring medical conditions like hypothyroidism, which is characterized by loss of hair, skin allergies, etc. Consult your veterinarian for solutions and alternatives.

When we got our second Siamese cat named Winston, we also sent him for desexing. As of this writing, my cats live happily with no health issues or any allergies. The normal hair shred is inevitable, but overall they are both happy and we hope that they will live with us longer than their life span.

Several veterinarians offer pet desexing services, and it’s essential to choose the best one in your town! Our fur babies go to our local veterinary clinic Devoted Vets, and our babies always have stress-free experiences.

  1. Surely the disadvantages are manageable and you are loving pet parent! I didn't even know we can desex pets! I would keep this in mind when I have my own new pet. I am a cat person, too, btw!

    1. The disadvantage of not desexing a cat is manageable but not good in the community and also to local wildlife.

  2. This is really a great idea. I just hope that desexing in the Philippines would be more affordable.

    1. I agree. Here in Australia, I paid $500 to desexed my Siamese cat, including the doctor's fee. Super mahal! Wish ko nga sana kasama sa healthcare namin eh, LOL

  5. I've heard this once and never thought it really happens. Are they less aggressive and noisy after desexing?

    1. Desexing a pet doesn't cure aggressiveness or making them less noisy. These factors are brought-up by their personality. You can train them to be less aggressive and noisy, and let them know who's the boss.
