Senior Year

While I was trying to focus on finishing my winter crochet project, suddenly a memory from my high school years pops into my head. I paused a bit and spent a few minutes thinking about it, realizing that somehow, I had an amazing high school year.

It was also a tough HS year back then like anyone else’s, but maybe not as hard as what the new generation of high school kids are facing nowadays (or maybe because I used to live in a bubble of a remote rural lifestyle away from the pressures of modernity). The new generation of kids will consider my old HS days as dorky, however, I manage to ace that journey and finished the year delivering my salutatory speech.

Being in school is fun, let alone being in high school – no phones, or computers. Only secondhand textbooks that have been sundried.

And no wonder that HS movies are still a huge hit for many, including Rebel Wilson’s newest Netflix comedy movie Senior Year, which somehow feels like a trip back to memory lane.

Mostly all good stuff.

An introvert HS student, who wants to be out there with her friends, have fun and meet other people. Someone who managed to be part of the smart-brainy clique, but still on a lower rank in terms of popularity at school because I was a late bloomer.

The same late bloomer who didn’t stop living in her introverted bubble decided to dance solo on stage in my senior year under the influence of Britney Spears - You Drive Me Crazy. It was like a “do it now, or never” kind of moment.

A week later, my senior year changed. I managed to be seen by others. That’s when I met my first high school boyfriend – one of the popular boys at school, who sings like he was a part of N’SYNC. Cute lad wears so many hair gels, always dressed nice and tidy, very charming – no wonder many girls at school want to date him.

That’s when I realized that great confidence, can lead you somewhere incredible.

But one thing that surprised me in this movie is when they depicted Y2K fashion as vintage.

AS IF!

Was it really that old?!!

Regardless of how the Gen Z kids see it, we millennials are still the coolest kids.

I just only wish I learned how to drive back then. Even now, I’m still in the process of learning the rules of a roundabout.

But who’s in a hurry? I like taking my time.

Speaking of Y2K fashion, I decided to upcycle my stepdaughter’s old winter school uniform and turn it into a pleated skirt. The textile is still in good condition, and there is no way that I will let it go.

In this look, I paired it with this crocheted jumper that I made months ago. The wool is from an old crochet blanket that I saved from the op shop.

Wearing a wool jumper will always be in style (and necessary!), especially in the crazy changing weather of Australia.

For those kids and even adults who are still trying to fit in, I totally get it. But remember to try harder to work on finding your own voice and express your truest self, because that's where you will be happy.

Can you believe that I was mistaken as a high schooler multiple times here in Australia?

Not my fault. What can I say, Asians don’t raisin!

  5. This film makes me smile, in the sense that I would pay gold to go back to high school now as an adult ... obviously she does it for major causes with the head still of a teenager, I would do it with today's head. I would enjoy school so much more!
