Reasons Why Buying Secondhand Car is our Preferred Choice for First-time Drivers
We are currently living in the regional area of Gippsland VIC, and it is a necessity to have your own car. Although we have decent public transport such as buses, trains, and privately-operated taxis, having your own car is still the most practical option for us.

As much as it is very tempting and exciting to own a brand-new car for daily use, my husband and I decided to buy a secondhand car that fits our current lifestyle.

Reasons Why Buying Secondhand Car is our Preferred Choice

1. Brand-new cars depreciate their value immediately
The moment you drive out your brand-new car off the lot, it goes down the value. Some cars still hold their value, but new cars that are produced nowadays can lose their value by 30% within the first year. By using the secondhand car, you don’t have to worry about its reselling value because you are aware that you’ll use it more often.

2. You can save more on buying a secondhand car
Because brand-new cars depreciate quickly, you use them to your advantage. For example, if you buy a car coming out of a two- or three-year lease, you might be able to save as much as 50 percent off the original price.

Unless you are looking for vintage lifestyle cars, regular secondhand cars are cheaper to buy. During the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve noticed a lot of people are selling their cars online through local Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for quick cash. That’s where we got our current secondhand car for a super sweet deal, which now my husband uses on a daily basis for work and running around errands with the children.

3. You don’t have to worry about the mortgage payments.
Usually, when you buy a brand new car, you put it on a mortgage plan. And that adds to your monthly bills on top of your other utility bills such as rent, electricity, gas, school fees, etc. By getting a secondhand car, you save a lot on this kind of stress.

4. You don’t have to worry about wear and tear
My husband always tells me that we don’t have to worry about the car’s minimal wear and tear. Having a secondhand car saves you the trouble of being too cautious about gaining more exterior damage, unlike a brand-new car. However, make sure that you keep your car clean and tidy, and works well.

5. Secondhand cars are the perfect option for first-time drivers.
As a first-time driver, you need to gain more driving experience on the road and learn the ways including the proper parking of your car. Thus, sometimes you will experience minor bumps on the road, and if you are driving a secondhand car, it minimizes your concern about the cost of damages and the cost of repairs.

6. Driving a secondhand car promotes sustainability
This is self-explanatory. You help to minimize the hard and metal waste by driving a secondhand car that is available near you. There is a recent report that used cars are now in hot demand as the supply chain shortages in the new car market have sent buyers hunting in the second-hand market for their preferred vehicle.

Buying secondhand cars in VIC State

Buy and transfer a registered vehicle
When you buy or receive as a gift a second-hand Victorian registered vehicle (car, truck, motorcycle, caravan, trailer, or boat) that will be garaged in Victoria, you must notify VicRoads of the vehicle transfer within 14 days of taking possession of the vehicle.

Complete your transfer online
You no longer need to visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to complete your vehicle transfer.
Simply request the seller to submit an online Notice of Disposal via their myVicRoads account to notify VicRoads of the transfer. When the seller notifies VicRoads of the transfer, the vehicle will be transferred into your name and displayed in your myVicRoads account the next day. To complete the transfer, log in to your myVicRoads account to provide VicRoads with your roadworthy certificate and payment of the transfer fee and motor vehicle duty (if applicable).

You will need to submit the following items for a transfer to be completed:

1. a completed vehicle transfer form, signed by you and the seller.
3. the payment of motor vehicle duty and transfer fees

Some vehicle and transfer types don’t need a roadworthy or require payment of motor vehicle duty or transfer fees. Visit vehicle exemptions for more information.

Watch this video for more information about the transfer of used/secondhand cars.

You can also check the Consumer Affairs Victoria regarding other guidelines on buying used/secondhand cars, additional fees, and charges, regarding the cooling-off period, including running fuel costs, and depreciation.

Before you buy a used car

Don't rush, take your time and do your research into the different makes and models, and consider the following:

Your budget
Work out how much you can afford to spend. Carpaymentcalculator.net will guide you on the value of the car or cars you're considering according to their year and model.

Your needs
What will you use the car for? If you do most of your driving in the city, a four-wheel drive is hardly necessary.

Safety
Check the used car safety ratings that are based on real-life accidents.

Insurance costs
These will vary from model to model. Once you've narrowed down your options get some quotes.

Environment
Check the car's fuel consumption and emissions rating. The Green Vehicle Guide can help you here.

Dealer, auction, or private sale
Decide where and how you want to buy the car. See what we have to say about these options further down in this article.

Regulations
Check your state or territory's regulations around buying and selling used cars, including how to make sure there's no money owing on the car. If you are buying secondhand cars in VIC State, you can refer to some helpful information from the VicRoads website. (https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration)

Reasons Why Buying Secondhand Car is our Preferred Choice for First-time Drivers

Although I already got my driver’s license, I’m not allowed to drive alone yet, however, I personally prefer secondhand cars! It is practical and functional and saves me a lot of money, and I find it less stressful. If we need to drive a better car for a special event, we can always borrow our friend’s car, or even rent one.

    1. It is a small gesture, and I know that it can be a good help to others. At that time, it was a car with no use for us (since we have another second-hand car, and I don't drive!), but for the lady, it will help to start her new life! That is awesome.

    1. Consider another scenario - if you buy a new car and someone stole it, you will be devastated so much, unlike when you buy a cheap second-hand car, the emotional damage wasn't much.

  4. I'm a big believer in buying used cars. But not TOO used. I always look for a pre-owned car that's about 2 years old. That's old enough to be a great deal but not so old that it won't have all the modern bells and whistles.

    1. Check the mileage too! Sometimes cars over 2 years old with lower mileage is also a good catch.

    1. The secondhand car industry here in Australia spike lots of interest recently due to the shortage of supply. Many Pops who collected cars for years are happy to sell.

  7. You are so right about all those reasons, Blair. You wouldn't want to scratch or dent your new baby as you are reverse-parking it, would you now?

    1. Yeah, that's right! When you are a first-time driver you expect that for the first 2 years, you will encounter minor car damages because you are still gaining driving experience. Hence, you don't want a brand new dream car to be your 'testing car' for this period.

  8. My car should be paid off right when my son is ready to get his license (not his permit). I'll likely give it to him. I'd rather have him in it, a used car I know, than one I get somewhere else. It's wonderful that you helped the woman. Not having a car is exhausting and overwhelming if you live in a place where it is necessary to have one.

  10. My boss also bought a second hand van for his family. How I wish it's easy to buy second hand cars here, but it's not that regulated here, so I would much rather ...if I can afford it...buy a brand new one because here, you'll never know what con you get into because sellers lie. And I don't know much about cars.

    1. Yeah I agree with you. Best to go to a reliable and known seller.

  11. I agree that cars depreciate in value the moment they leave the seller's place. We gravitate towards second hand cars ourselves; we think they're practical and money-saving.

    1. And it is easy to upgrade even in secondhand cars. We always believe that there is always someone immediately needs a quick cash, and willing to let go of their brand new car.

  13. I always buy second hand cars. The speed that value is lost from new cars is crazy. I never buy anything too old so they tend not to been too bad for the environment.
