Tesselaar Tulip Festival is back after hiatus

Tesselaar Tulip Festival - Melbourne
The Tesselaar Tulip Festival has returned this year after the massive event was suspended for three years due to the pandemic.

The much-loved and visually spectacular Tesselaar Tulip Festival, in Melbourne’s magical Dandenong Ranges, returns this spring after its hiatus of three years due to the pandemic, and is once again here to surprise, delight, and inspire spectators with its breathtaking bulbs.

Returning for its 67th year, the annual flower festival is set to feature over 900,000 tulips spread across five acres of stunning farmland, providing a stunning and picture-perfect backdrop for families and friends to get together and reconnect with nature’s majesty and beauty in a display that is unrivaled anywhere else in the country.

The Tesselar Tulip Festival usually sees 100,000 visitors each year, and until Sunday 9 October will display close to a million bulbs and hundreds of thousands of spring flowers; including daffodils and spring starflowers spread throughout the fields.

Celebrating the start of Spring, the Tesselaar Tulip Festival is a Victorian heritage destination event with over 100,000 people making the short trek out of Melbourne and into the countryside to soak up the most spectacular floral display in the country alongside fantastic food and drinks from around the world and entertainment for children and fun-loving adults.

The Tesselaar Tulip Festival runs over four weeks from September 10 – October 9, with themed weeks and weekends, including a Turkish Weekend, Spring Fever Weeks, Dutch Weekend, Rock The Fields Weekend, and a Food, Wine, and Jazz weekend, among others. You can find the full schedule of these epic events here

Rounded out by live entertainment each day, picnic areas, retail therapy including Habitat Nursery, souvenir shops and market stalls, free parking, and millions of photo opportunities, this festival stands as the perfect excuse for a road trip.

Tulips are blooming a bit slower

Tesselaar Tulip Festival director and fourth generation of the family-run business, Paul Tesselaar, said due to a cold and wet winter, tulips have been slower to bloom and ticket sales have dropped slightly.

‘We had KaBloom earlier this year, which was our best KaBloom ever – we were inundated with people that we’re happy to get out, come up into Silvan through the forest, experience all the nature and fresh air we have out here,” Paul said.

“But with the weather, it will be a bit slower this year, which happens on average about every four years where the weather is just a little bit dull.

We’re only just starting to get to the stage now where we’re happy with the number of flowers out, so once the school holidays start, we should have a few bumper days to see us through to the ninth of October.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to be able to continue the amazing work of my Grandparents and share the glory of the tulips.’

Opening with Turkish weekend, followed by Dutch weekend, and upcoming Children’s weeks throughout the school holidays, this year’s Tulip Festival will also see food, wine, and jazz weekend from Friday 23 September to Sunday 25 September.

Ticket Prices:

Adult Entry: AU$32.00
Concessionaire: AU$28.00

Children 16 and under are free to ensure the festival is accessible for all to enjoy, especially during the September school holidays.
