Qantas100: This Long-Haul Flight Attendant Shares her Doll Uniform Collection

Back in December 2020, my husband and I had an opportunity to visit Longreach, Queensland where the Qantas Founders Museum is located. It is the same year that Qantas celebrates its glorious centennial year in the aviation industry.

Although Qantas Founders Museum is not owned by the Qantas per se, the museum was built by the local community together with all the private supporters of the airline as a tribute to Qantas where it started in Longreach Queensland. Qantas is now one of their biggest patrons, donating several old aircraft and machines through the years, and thanks to the many generous patrons who pledged their loyalty to this national aircraft carrier.

As I would be so thrilled to share with you more stories about the museum, I would love to share with you the first one of the highlight exhibitions.

Meet the creator of the miniature Qantas uniforms!

Sara Armbrecht (IG: @sarawakansaijin)

What started as a weekend craft project for long haul flight attendant Sara Armbrecht (IG: @sarawakansaijin)  took off into a two-year labor of love, as she made more than 40 miniature Qantas doll uniforms.

The 45 tiny hand-made replica outfits, which celebrate the past 100 years of the Australian airline's fashion, now form the Qantas History Series on display at the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, Queensland.

It all started when Sara attended a Qantas event for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. She spotted a doll on display wearing the current Qantas uniform, designed by Martin Grant, and asked about buying one.
When she was told it was not for sale, she decided to make her own - despite having no prior sewing experience. The first outfit took Sara a week to make and when she showed the doll to her colleagues, they encouraged her to make more.

Since then, she has spent hundreds of hours researching and making the uniforms. Each miniature uniform takes about three to four hours to make an outfit for each doll, and she researches using old pictures and Qantas uniforms if she can find them.

When it comes to sourcing material or pattern uniforms, such as the Pucci uniform, Sara draws the designs onto the fabric by hand.

Sara Armbrecht also recreated Qantas' latest flight attendants’ uniform originally designed by Martin Grant, an Australian designer based in Paris with over 30 years of experience.

The collection features a French navy, Qantas red, ruby red, and fuchsia palette, with garments designed to be flattering on all body shapes. Martin's signature piece is the bold stripe dress ensuring our employees will be visible whether they're onboard or in the terminal.

The collection also saw the addition of a hat for our female cabin crew and the perfect trench in French navy - a chic addition to the range, which provides extra warmth in cooler climates.

Aside from creating miniature uniforms, Sara Armbrecht is also busy making miniature replicas of in-flight meals to go with the collection.

She also recreated the passenger in-flight pajamas, which I also have!

The Qantas in-flight pajama is so comfortable. You can get it for free whenever you take Qantas Business Class overnight flight, including their in-flight designer pouch of toiletries.

You can also notice several Qantas flight attendant uniforms featured in their flight safety video

I’ve gained admiration and loyalty flying with Qantas now that I moved here to Australia. This year, Qantas is top-rated as the safest airline in the world in 2023. Meanwhile, Qantaslink the regional arm of Qantas is rated Best Regional Airline for 2022 with new aircraft and new routes across the broad expanse of Australia.

  1. I love how she started it without prior sewing experience. Admirable plus the dedication she put into it.
