How I Upcycle St. Paul’s Anglican Grammar Dress Uniform

How I Upcycle St. Paul’s AGS Dress Uniform
Before the end of last year, I received a bag of outgrown school uniforms from my two stepdaughters. Indeed, the uniforms that we just bought last 12-months ago don’t fit them anymore. Both grew up so quick that my husband and I didn’t even realize it.

So I was in my sewing room, with the bag of old school uniforms, and thinking how could I upcycle these dresses so I could personally use them. It took me almost a week of thinking while staring at the dresses, analyzing their seams, etc. to come up with the right plan.

The actual cost of the dress

School uniforms especially for private schools are very expensive. This school dress alone costs $88.00, and my girls only used them for 6 months.

So now, you will understand my eagerness not to easily get rid of these without trying my best first.
The idea is to upcycle the dress which will only leave fewer textile scraps, which I am happy to report that I successfully did. I also managed to create two looks, using the previous upcycled school uniforms many seasons ago.

In this new project, I decided to change the original sleeves into ruffles because I want the dress to look more feminine, and be more ME! I also unstitched the hems and other stitches at the back, removed the original pleats, and cut the dress into two separate ensembles.

I used another dress to create more ruffles that go around the sleeves and skirt. The original sleeves turned into a front pocket of my new skirt.

And here is the final look.

I always love wearing school uniforms. Maybe because I love being in school back in the day, and the experienced I had then are so memorable for the most part of it. Schools gave me the foundation that I need to achieve I have now in life, and I am truly grateful that I took that ladder up.

Although someone, like Jake Wallis Simons, expressed his grievances against school uniforms the uniform policy has contributed to discontent and rebellion of students, etc. However, I definitely agree with him when he mentioned that ‘uniforms are a nightmare for parents.’

That’s why I tried my best to upcycle old school uniforms!

I think I did a brilliant idea of turning the old dresses into two separate ensembles. Check this another look I did with the skirt I upcycled previously.

But first, here’s the original tunic dress, which costs $141.00 usually students wear during the winter season.
