For his Spring Summer 2025 collection, Rahul Mishra delves into the duality of Indian girls from rural villages who move to big cities in pursuit of their dreams. His collection, titled AFEW, captures the spirit of these women as they navigate between tradition and modernity. Mishra’s designs reflect how they embrace Western culture while remaining deeply connected to their heritage, mixing modern fashion with traditional Indian accessories like dupattas, bindus, and delicate golden bangles.
“It’s a global approach,” Mishra said during a showroom appointment in Paris. He explained that his vision for the collection centers on a girl who is “a bit vulnerable, somewhat brave, and curious about the modern world.” Yet, she is firmly rooted in her cultural values and traditions. Mishra expressed concerns about the homogenization of local traditions into a globalized culture, an issue he seeks to counter through his designs.
The collection is designed to blend international appeal with distinct Indian styling. One of the key pieces is the kurta, a traditional long T-shaped tunic, reinterpreted as crisp white cotton shirtdresses adorned with subtle tone-on-tone embroidery. Mishra also drew inspiration from Jaipur’s multi-paneled kurtas for pleated skirts worn over leggings, reimagined in bold floral prints. Floral motifs and irises were featured prominently, embroidered in sequins on sundresses and masculine shirts. These patchwork techniques echo the methods used by rural Indian women to personalize their kurtas, adding a deeply personal and cultural touch to the garments.
“There’s strength in preserving your culture,” Mishra emphasized. “Wealth isn’t just about money; it’s about culture, upbringing, and family values.” His AFEW collection celebrates this sentiment, highlighting the beauty of tradition in a modern, globalized world.
