OOTD The Language of Hydrangeas

OOTD The Language of Hydrangeas
My hydrangea plant has finally bloomed!

I was quite anxious back in winter when its leaves withered, and it was quite a depressing situation. Yet, someone told me that it is natural for hydrangeas during the cold season.

And now it looks gorgeous! Magnifico!

OOTD The Language of Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas have long captured hearts around the world, and their meanings shift beautifully across cultures and time. Originating in Japan,  these lush blooms are treasured as symbols of sincerity, deep gratitude, and heartfelt apology. One well‑known legend tells of a Japanese emperor who offered hydrangeas to the family of the woman he loved—a gesture of remorse and devotion.

In Chinese culture, hydrangeas take on a more abundant spirit. Their full, cloud‑like clusters are seen as expressions of prosperity, enduring love, and hope. They’re often given to celebrate optimism and the promise of good things ahead.

Europe once held a different view. During the Victorian era, hydrangeas were sometimes linked to vanity due to their extravagant petals and dramatic presence. Thankfully, those outdated associations have faded, and today the meaning of hydrangeas is guided far more by their colour than by old folklore.

If you’re choosing hydrangeas for a gift or arrangement, here’s what each colour traditionally represents:

Pink Hydrangea
A symbol of thoughtfulness, grace, and affection. Pink hydrangeas make a tender, romantic gesture for someone truly special.

White Hydrangea
Purity, innocence, and honour shine through in white hydrangeas. Their soft elegance makes them perfect for weddings or welcoming a new baby.

Blue Hydrangea
Blue hydrangeas carry the gentle weight of apology and gratitude. They’re ideal for saying “thank you” or offering a sincere, heartfelt “I’m sorry.”

Purple Hydrangea
A nod to royalty, abundance, and success. Purple hydrangeas are a wonderful way to celebrate achievements—especially promotions or milestones.

Green Hydrangea
Fresh starts, good fortune, vitality, and youthfulness. Green hydrangeas are a thoughtful choice for someone embarking on a new chapter.

Although the print isn’t a hydrangea but a collection of purple dahlias and chrysanthemums, this dress is still a good fit to celebrate my delight with our blooming hydrangea plant.

I made this dress ages ago using second-hand textiles I bought from the op shop.

My goal for the coming years is to slowly build my own hydrangea garden with an English garden aesthetic, and with a lot of patience (and funding!). I knew that one day I would have my own little paradise.

Until the next blooming season, and more OOTDs to come! Ta-ta for now, and see you next year!
