Love Marie In Full Bloom Exhibition

A few weeks ago, I’d paid a visit to one of my favorite modern Filipino artist Love Marie Ongpauco-Escudero at her latest exhibition at ArtistSpace, Makati. I’ve been following her exhibitions and collections ever since I’ve first visited her first exhibition back in 2014.

Something has changed with her art, but not the style, nor its sensibility. Her signature knack for texture and layers remains, but something is different, though at a glance there is no dramatic departure from the artistic breakthrough with which she reintroduced herself as someone other than her stage name (Heart Evangelista) with something else, something so much more to offer.

Four years since she came out as a visual artist, something has changed and it’s palpable in this new collection, “In Full Bloom,” her first exhibition in 2018. Yet, even as it is unmistakable, it is subtle it might disguise itself among the brushstrokes, now bolder and more nonchalant. It’s so subtle it might blend with the wash of colors, more dauntless, unblinking in the shadows.

Even the women in her paintings, veiled in flower, unreachable in the abyss of their own thoughts, hinting at their creator’s autobiographical approach but never quite confirming it, seem to have evolved, les confined to the reality of proportions, more daring to soar into the realms above the clouds and dive into the depths of dreams, floating life ruffled, colored petals on the wind or losing themselves in a deep well of emotions.

Love Marie’s fascination with symbolisms, which has been evident since her artistic debut back in 2014, is on the next level. Each canvas reveals a complex range of personal yet universal sentiments framed with the impression of a wind blowing, petals rustling, a carpet of flowers rising like the tide, and a breathless sigh emanating from the innermost corners of the soul. But the swirl of movement, despite the delicious melancholy, is an expression of release or a metaphor for newfound freedom. In the dreams they conceal beneath the lids of their closed eyes of the dreams that smolder in those eyes when they open them, the women in the paintings have sought and found in oil on canvas as escape route from the banality of life.

None of these are new to the artist who, despite her diverse interests, has maintained consistency in her work. Yet something is different. “Maybe it’s because I think I’ve found myself,” she says. “I’m so much more comfortable with myself that, with every decision I make, I can go all out.” And so the artist comes into her own. The energy is visible and the continuing evolution is embedded in each painting of this year’s collection that, like a breath of fresh air, is drawn from a reconstructed Eden, a garden of possibilities, a forest of discoveries, and the bloom of self-actualization.

For years, her works becomes for expressive, becomes more vibrant with life and recently in full bloom!

In this latest collection, which showcased her twenty (20) blossoming creations, makes me felt I was travelled to this gorgeous garden in France, and just spending a lazy afternoon admiring its beauty, sniffing its fresh-flower scents, wearing my summer dress and straw hat. Ah it was such a lovely picture in my head while staring at her paintings.

Her latest creations made me crave to visit more artistic gardens around the country and also in Europe, and soon I will in France!
