I have fallen in love with fashion ever since my Mom bought my first fluffy princess cut dress for my 5th birthday. It was a black dress, with white lace on the hemline, with printed polka dots and strawberries. Geez I felt and looked confident wearing that dress! And I knew from then that fashion would be part of my life.
For years, I learned to sew my own dresses and get familiar with various fabrics. I was that little girl who prefers to hang out with my old Grandma (she was a dressmaker in town) under her cutting table, collecting the scrap fabrics I could find, and making my own little dresses for my dolls.
I didn’t pursue a career in fashion as I found my sewing passion just a hobby and focused on other passions I have.
But that didn’t fade my excitement whenever I got invited to a number of fashion shows and exhibits in the city. And each time I stumbled upon some free exhibitions at the malls like SM Aura Premier, I always make sure that I pay them a visit.
Each year, students from Fashion Design and Merchandising of De La Salle-College Saint Benilde host their graduation with a fashion show and exhibitions showcasing their graduation pieces. This year’s culminating activity entitled “Sinulid” (a Tagalog term which means, “sewing thread”) presents these budding designers’ individuality through their creative designs. I admit that these young designers have their unique taste and voices, some patronize the use of traditional fabrics, and some even uses their designs to voice out their political views (ehem). It’s been a while since I made a blog critic for fashion, and I think this is the time I continue sharing it.
Maria Katrina
First, I like that clothing brand that is named after a sophisticated and stylish lady. Maria Katrina reminds me of that jet-setter lady who loves to spend her long weekends in the luxurious Phuket resort, bringing her favorite girlfriends, and of course her personal photographer. The asymmetrical designs, paired with ruffles, and a mixing of fabrics bring a bold and stylish piece. Maria Katrina aims for every muse to wear unique pieces, which you will never catch repeating wearing her clothes.
Phyllis by Secosana
As an heiress to an established bag brand that is worn and loved by most Filipinos, Phylis Secosana goes beyond the brand with a new fashion line that she named after herself, Phillis by Secosana. It is indisputable that she years making a name for herself in the cutthroat industry of fashion. Her preference for comfort in clothes and pop-up patches makes her brand different and unique.
Coming from a trip to Japan, she immediately fell in love with the endearing country. She was specifically inspired by Japan’s infamous cuisine which is also without a doubt her favorite cuisine. Substantial to her collection are oversized silhouettes. She constructed famous Japanese foods such as sashimi and ramen as embroidered patches and strategically sewed them onto the garments. Her collection and brand exude contemporary yet cute omen which resembles her personality and target market.
I like how the designer combines her passion for fashion, food, and Japanese culture into one. Most sushi chefs wear black clothing and if she will dress as a sushi chef, this could be a perfect one. But I would like it to be in a bold color, like royal blue or hot pink! Contact: phyllis.secosana17@gmail.com
Ansuelta
Created by the young Filipino Designer Anna Galang, the Ansuelta collection uses organic fabrics imported from India and uses natural dyes like cochineal and coffee pulp to achieve certain colors. Her collection was inspired by photographs in the Philippines during the 1900s.
I have a secret penchant for loose silhouettes that could cover my alluring bodice, and I also discovered that my boyfriend also has a fondness for clothing taste. It is impressive that the designer uses sustainable fabrics, which makes these pieces more valuable not because of the designs per se, but also the stories behind each fabric. The choices of colors are also pleasing to the eyes.
Eros
I admit that it is refreshing to see young designers use our traditional Filipino clothing silhouettes in their designs, and always applaud how creative they become. But I was taken aback when I came to see it closer – the designer implies that this collection is inspired by Filipino women through hardships and many challenges, and the current events happening in the country even printed some both statements (most from the local broadsheet) depicting the current leader of the country. It truly contradicts what true Filipino women are. The designer is making a statement that a modern Filipina is independent, powerful, and does whatever her heart to. I admire the boldness of the designer, but being political in the sense and attaching it to what a Filipina should be is such a huge turn-off.
A dress represents who you are, and wearing these pieces not only attracts a bold statement, and also brings a negative representation of who you are as a citizen. I’ll pass, and put that dresses off the shelves. It is such a shame to use our traditional Filipina clothing and attached some garbage thoughts, duh.
VIA
VIA is a brand that features designs exclusively and handcrafted by the Filipino T’boli tribe. The brand is all about local artisans, fabrics, and the Philippines’ rich history and great potential. It is to showcase the textile and artisan products from Mindanao and highlight her hometown, South Cotabato.
The brand aims to promote clothing by exhibiting intricate patterns and color combinations that are recognizably local and some, even tribal. The uniqueness of the designs and the labor of love that goes into every piece are some of the brand’s formulas. I will give the designer a hundred claps for taking pride in her native fabric and designs. Bravo, girl!
KiTAi_
I remember somehow in Japan editorial news how the bright district of Harajuku is starting to fade away and being replaced by the practical designs of Uniqlo. Harajuku fashion is a subculture that’s been in Japan for many years and inspired many people from all over the world. It would be a huge sadness if this subculture will just fade away easily. Fashion is a self-expression, a statement you want to convey, and KiTAI_ seems trying to save that. I like how the designer makes these pieces quirky and wearable, especially that signature transparent skirt will pom details.
Ette Nora
These pieces showcase how versatile they are and can be your favorite pieces even not on the beach or pool. The designer makes it fun and empowering, making all ladies feel proud of their pieces.
XANDRIA
If you miss the 60’s fashion then this collection will give you much love. The bold colors and geometrical designs scream your parent’s hippest lifestyle that is waaayyy different than ours. Seriously, you should get one of these and make your Momma proud.
Honey Lim
If you are a fan of resort wear with alluring silhouettes and detailed embroidery, I bet Honey Lim’s designs will be pleasing to your taste. I adore how she makes each embroidery fun, vibrant, and wearable. These dainty pieces are so adorable and would be wearable all year round.
Monica Rae
We will go for a once-in-a-lifetime luxury getaway and it would be a shame if we will bring our old bikini. A luxury getaway should be a memorable and stylish experience, thus having a piece of Monica Rae in your luggage is a must. I like how she lusty accessorized the bikini with intricate beadings and pearls, perfect for your getaways somewhere in the Caribbean. And of course, your kumara from the States will ooze with envy while watching your IG stories.
Lois
If you are still in the mood for tutus and Lolita-look, I bet this one from Lois would be your next eye candy. Just make sure your little doggy knows it’s not for his pleasure.
Barbasa
For strong women and gender-fluid sisters, this collection is a promising look. This is something that I could wear during a one-in-a-blue-moon partying with my French boyfriend, and get naughty after. (*wink). Where is my baton?!
I.La
This clothing brand brings Filipino artistry into the modern world. The designs and silhouettes are highly inspired by the past, especially from the costumes of the early 20th century, and emphasize the use of callado embroidery of Taal, Batangas.
These intricate traditional embroidery makes these pieces more especially and would last for many years, and a perfect heirloom for your kin, if you take good care of them.
AM
Pink will never go out of style, and also the hand-painted fabrics. This collection reminds me of my preppy years back in college, the lady who is a favorite of most even that notorious grumpy Guidance Counsellor, because of her cuteness of smart-and-cute outfit that aces every exam. Ah, I miss those days! And I wish many ladies prefer this kind of silhouette.
ARIE
Athleisure is becoming a huge trend nowadays, and even non-athlete princesses can be seen wearing this fashion. However, if you want to look sporty and feminine, then these ARIE pieces would be something you might consider having. I like that embroidered cheery blossoms designs on their sporty pink jacket, which can be worn in any season.
Margarita
Having a sophisticated name, the Margarita collection is something that is worth investing in and would last for many seasons. Its classic designs and cuts make the wearer more feminine and stand out from the rest. Those embroideries also make the whole collection fresh and alluring.
R'Maya
This local brand is another tribute to one of our local and traditional clothing. This dress with a beaded sarimanok design is very luxurious that would be hard not to get noticed by your amigas.
I might be a little biased against designers who advocate local and traditional designs because we must. We have many talented creatives, and it’s time for us to promote our local ideas and make them known globally. Create something that is timeless and worth investing in, and stories behind every piece so that buyers worth regret swiping their visa cards for you. Set aside your political views coz nobody wants to wear that.
How about you, which designs are your favorites?
Wonderful they give fashion students a chance to show their work. Fashion industry is so interesting and confusing all at the sometime. I would not find high fashion like this in the area I live, still enjoy seeing it.
