Wonderful Hair Leads to Wonderful Opportunity – How Netflix’s Self Made Ignites Women Empowerment

Recently, I’ve been spending my extra time bingeing for movies that could help my writer’s side gain materials for my next blog. You see, because of the recent pandemic happenings outside of my comfort zone, many negative news flashings on my tv screen, etc. – these things add anxiety and stress to my being which leads to having my body reacts in a negative way like having bad skin, or worst having a dull hair.

You read that right. Stress and anxiety make my hair look dull.

And many of you would understand. There’s a reason why our hair is called our crowning glory. The most prized possession that we can spend half of our hard-earned paycheck just to have a healthy-looking hair fresh from the salon.

That’s why when Netflix just-dropped four-part Netflix series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker, I knew that I should spend the next hours (and sacrifice my regular afternoon walks), grabbed some fruity drinks and binge with Octavia Spencer.

The four-part limited series, starring Octavia Spencer, chronicles the real-life pioneering work of Madam C.J. Walker, who has credited as America's first black female self-made millionaire thanks to her hair care business in the early 1900s. I’m not good in American history, but I first learned about Madam C.J. Walker from Queen Latifah’s 2005 movie Beauty Shop, where she got a mini altar of her.

Madam C.J. Walker poses for a portrait circa 1914.

From rugs to riches, Madam C.J. Walker (also known as Sarah Breedlove) is an inspiring woman of her years. The lines in episodes are triggers could trigger your emotion and hunger to succeed. She shared her own personal experience in using her hair grower product to the ladies of the market, making it the most trusted hair product during that time because she shares to make everyone look beautiful as they are.

That becomes the inspiration for the miniseries, which charts Walker's unshakeable determination in establishing her business and empowering black women despite the racial and gender barriers she faced, as well as betrayal and disappointment related to those close to her.

It is not all about having great hair. But having strong confidence, power, and determination to dream big.

Always remember…

Hair is Beauty. Hair is Power
