How to Wear Green Splendidly in 2021, plus new DIY!

wear green
We think it is about time for new year’s resolutions to turn away from demanding diet fads and far-reaching goals that we end up ditching by mid-February. Why not rather turn your attention to Mother Earth, and resolve to adopt individual responsibility and decisive action-based solutions towards climate change?

Many of us just don’t know where to start. Hence, we breakdown some easy-to-implement green resolutions that you can use to start making small changes for a big difference in 2021 and beyond.

Be wise in bagging your stuff.

Keep a selection of reusable shopping bags at hand, and don’t accept plastic bags. Keep your reusable bags at the place you can easily locate them, and some extra pieces in your car (or even in your travel bag!) so you don’t forget on your next shopping trip.

Remember those free linen press kit handbags that are been sitting under your working table? Use those bags on your next shopping trip.

TRIVIA: Did you know that it takes between 100 to 400 years for plastic to break down in a landfill.

Eat Green

Around the world, the plant-based eating trend continues to grow in popularity as more people reduce or eliminate meat from their diets. Grocery stores are finally acknowledging this movement by offering more vegan, plan-based, meat-free, and dairy-free options. While going 100% meat-free is the way forward for some, it doesn’t work for us all – and that’s ok. You can start small, by introducing ‘meat-free Mondays’ and working your way towards cooking veggie dishes three nights a week. There are plenty of recipes out there, and food inspiration is just a quick online search away!

Check our dear friend, and fellow blogger Maria Rona Beltran’s how she embraced plant-based dining!

Travel lighter

With its heavy offset of carbon emissions, air travel can really take its toll on the planet. The last few years have seen a rising travel trend of swapping the plane for the train. The Swedes call this love of land-based travel ‘tagskryt’, and it is a great way to explore a new country or region in your geographical backyard. All aboard!

Don’t Be Trashy!

Although it may sound obvious, many people find the effort of putting something in the bin far too taxing. Or just relying on the poor street sweepers coz it is their job to clean. This is especially evident on our country’s beautiful beaches and hiking trails, or even in many public parks in the city. Engage with your community and organize monthly clean-up missions – it’s also the perfect opportunity for the entire family and friends to get involved!

Share what you wear.

I’ve been a huge fan of shopping in secondhand shops, and many charity op-shops around Australiaand each trip always give me an amazing feeling. Op-shopping turned to be one of my new hobbies, being stylish without breaking my trust fund, and another way of giving back to the community.

Upcycling is another way of repurposing your clothes. It also a great opportunity to be creative, and give appreciation to garments, not to mention minimizing textile waste.

Setting up clothes swapping system with friends and family is not only lessens the load on textile mass production but also instills an appreciation for extending each garment’s life span. By doing this, we can also encourage brands to shift focus away from quantity and towards quality.

You want to see another upcycled project out of a duvet cover and a pillowcase?

This is a single-sized duvet and I only used the other green half for this dress project.

Using the pattern I’ve been using from my previous dresses, this fabric looks so green and fun to wear. Some find a color green dress quite tricky, but I’m glad I found some inspiration from the famous Princess.

Adding a huge bow is always a fun idea.

And with a lot of patience, watching much period-drama television series from Foxtel, while my Siamese cat maneuvering my fabrics, here is the result!

We get it – going all-out green is easier to say than done. But starting by implementing even just one of these new habits can get you going in the right direction.

Act now, not later. And be happily GREEN!

  3. I used to frequent thrift shops when I was still young and was singing for a living. It was the best place to get nice, unique, funky clothes to wear for the gig that wasn't going to eat up into my savings. You did that dress so well. Congratulations!

  4. The dresses you make are always SOOO pretty! Upcycling is one of my favorite things to do with old stuff aside from donating them or auctioning them away (just the pricier items though). Since the start of 2021, I've also made goals for myself to live greener, from my food to the way I live. I try to avoid doing and buying things that can harm the environment and it really feels like I'm helping the planet! Great feeling overall.
