Three Generations of Wool

crochet and knitwear fashion 2022
I don’t know how many crocheted clothes I made since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The moment I got a new bag of wool, my heart leaps with joy like a little kid in Disneyland.

I guess many avid crocheters can relate when I said that crocheting is like storytelling.
Each piece that I create is based on the mood and feelings I had during that moment, and sometimes based on memories.

Just like when my Aussie mother-in-law hand me down two bags of wool back in the summer of 2020. The wool used to own by my husband’s Greek grandmother who passed away years ago. Though I haven’t got an opportunity to meet her, through my mother-in-law’s stories, she seems a very lovely old lady. She loves crocheting as well as other crafts.

When I received that wool, I felt a sudden unfamiliar comfort. Or maybe the thought of privilege.

Right then, I immediately did my work on making something wearable.

Without a concrete pattern on hand (all my patterns are on my head, quite lazy to make a draft!), I started this project that took two weeks with several trial-and-errors.

Here is the result – a crocheted top perfect for the winter season!

I felt a sigh of relief when I finished it, and also felt proud that I make use of my old Greek grandma’s wool. This piece has literally traveled in three generations – from Greek Grandma to my Aussie mother-in-law, and to myself!

How awesome is that!

Recently, I looked for inspiration on how to style my recent piece and found one from Christian Dior 2019 Resort Collection

The designer Maria Grazia Chiuri took Dior’s inspiration from the escaramuza riders, extraordinary female rodeo riders from Mexico.

I may not own a horse, nor have a horse-riding skill on-hand however, I manage to pull this look, using the dress that I got from the charity shop.

This clue crocheted jumper is considered one of my prized creations. It makes it more meaningful knowing that the material and the story behind come from three generations of women.
