Upcycling Old Thobe into a Spring Dress

Upcycling Old Thobe into a Spring Dress
Back in autumn of this year, my friend gifted me a secondhand thobe which she reckons I might find a use for it. I am up for this challenge of flipping clothes that fits my style, hence, it would be nice to make something awesome for this spring season.

What is a thobe?
Thawb (Arabic: ثَوْب "garment"), also spelled thobe or tobe (also known as a jubbah) is an ankle-length robe, usually with long sleeves. It is commonly worn in the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, North Africa, other neighboring Arab countries, and some countries in East and West Africa. Worn at any time of the day and suitable for a range of occasions, the thobe is a versatile piece of clothing worn by men from all social backgrounds, classes, and professions.

The most loved texture utilized for a thobe is cotton; nonetheless, woolen material is likewise utilized in chilly climates. Thobes are made in polyester, georgette, or any lightweight texture. Thobes produced using lighter textures are viewed as relaxed and are normally worn as dresses for ordinary use in the agreeable climate of one’s home.

This thobe turns out to have so much room, which is a great piece for this upcycling project. The pinkish pinstripe also adds to its impressive design.

This thobe is made well, and I planned to use most of its fabric and flip it into a new design. I can say that it wasn’t an easy task. It took 4 days of careful designing, cutting, and sewing pieces together.

I decided to make a cottagecore-inspired dress because it is still fitting for the season and for my style. The fabric is made of cotton which makes the clothing breathable and easy to upcycle.

I kept the original front opening, reshaped the original sleeves into puff sleeves, and add some elastics on the wrist part, and waist area.

After cutting the shirt based on my desired length, the leftover fabric is used to make some ruffles around the skirt area. I finally found the use of this pink printed viscose textile that my Aussie Grandma gave me two years ago and made more ruffles to accessories the whole dress.

The thobe already has its deep pockets which are perfect!

  4. It's amazing what a little creativity can accomplish! I have never tried making clothing, but one of my teenage girls has and she has come up with some really cool things, often using things she finds aroudn the house, in her own closet.
