If you know Dolly’s iconic hit music 9 to 5, you know that this song is fitting to today’s IWD celebration:
Tumble out of bed
And stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower
And the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets, the traffic starts jumpin'
For folks like me on the job from 9 to 5
Workin' 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it
9 to 5
For service and devotion
You would think that I
Would deserve a fat promotion
Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is
Out to get me, hmmm
The Australian premiere of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 Musical in Melbourne was another entertaining piece of storytelling.
Proving an ideal fit for a cinema-to-stage adaptation, the hit 1980 movie 9 to 5 provides three leading ladies for the price of one, not to mention the scope, fully realized, for an all-singing, all-dancing set of stenographers and executives. Hailing from Broadway in 2009, 9 to 5 the Musical soared to new life in a restaged production for London’s West End in 2019, its hearty feminist power amplified again for a new generation.
I played it over and over in my head and while the lyrics are on point, we can’t deny on how much women continuously fight for equality and respect in this man’s world. However, this should not be the case if we don’t do something about it.
Just because it is what it is, doesn’t mean it should be.
Whether in the workplace, in the household, or the society as a whole, women need to have their voice to be heard louder than the rest and receive respect and opportunities, including support just the same as men.
9 to 5 is a 1980 American comedy film starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. The movie is now streaming on Disney+
