Upcycling Denim Jeans into Maxi Skirt

Upcycling Denim Jeans into Maxi Skirt
Recently, I kept noticing the comeback of denim skirts with a twist – having odd hemlines and cuts, which I find very interesting.

Denim is one of the textiles that I like which never goes out of style. Owning good quality denim jeans is a must in every wardrobe and is considered a staple piece.

A couple of days ago, I was checking my stash of outgrown clothes (previously owned by my stepchildren) to find something to upcycle, and I remembered that I got a huge bag of old denim jeans. It was a pity that they didn’t fit me either, however, I decided to play with a couple of jeans and start to make my own denim skirt.

I have this design in my mind, and with the help of browsing on Pinterest and Instagram, I finally found a design that is practical and saves most of the textile.

The recent Tokyo Fashion Week is such a huge outlet of inspiration for many streetstyle fashion!

After a few hours of unstitching the jeans, cutting, and sewing I finally managed to create a denim skirt that I envisioned in the past weeks.

These two pieces of jeans are good enough to make this upcycled maxi-denim skirt. I opt to leave that odd hemline look, and those ripped areas give an edgy feel.

I felt great satisfaction after making this skirt, and finally, I managed to upcycle a couple of jeans with less hassle, and hopefully I could make another upcycled piece using the rest of the denim jeans I have.

They will never go to the landfill.

  4. What a great way to prevent clothes from going to the dump! I know sometimes jeans get blown out in the thigh area or end up with too many holes, so this is a great alternative to the trash.

    1. That is true! These jeans are used to be my stepdaughters' jeans, but they are grownup now. I don't want to send it to recycle center coz I'm not sure if it will be recycled properly. I'll try my best to keep on reusing this new upcycled skirt and hope it lasts for years.

  5. I absolutely like how the upcycled jeans turned out! It looks to be the type of outfit found only in Harajuku (Tokyo). I don't generally wear dresses, but if I had this, I would definitely wear it! Great job (as always), Blair!

    1. Denim is a very versatile fabric, but quite a challenge to use. Maybe with further practice, I'll get more experience in using denim fabric.
