INES DE LA FRESSANGE DESIGNS THE NEWEST BAG COLLECTION FOR ROGER VIVIER



“Creativity is intelligence having fun—I saw that on Instagram today. Albert Einstein said it!” Inès de la Fressange, the brand ambassador of Roger Vivier, declares, attempting to explain the process, which she insists is really a non-process, that lead to “Inès’ Personal Choice: A Cosmopolitan Journey”—a group of her creatively decorated and intelligently embellished Miss Viv handbags (you know, that short-strapped classic with the silver pilgrim buckle closure).




De la Fressange says the bags are meant to represent her adventures on the road—a sort of quirky travel diary, if you will, told in satchel form. “I hate strategy and planning,” she avers, the fringe of her Prada Western jacket flapping softly for emphasis. But surely some planning has gone into this endeavor, which includes a Miss Viv she has smothered in sequins of silver and gold or black and white named Swinging London, and Scrapbag, which sports the letters RV and reminds one of the monograms that used to identify trunks for ocean voyages. A pink lavender background hosts cherry blossoms and is called the Nippon-nimayu; the Barock, a lovely rendering in crepe, turns out not to be an homage to our president by a bad speller, but de la Fressange’s interpretation of Baroque architecture.

Some of the purses will arrive at Vivier boutiques in March; others will have to be special-ordered. The wittily named Mademoiselle de la Frange, whose fringe echoes de la Fressange’s outfit today, will definitely be in stock. Showing off a homespun example embellished with flowers and golden threads, she confesses, “I’ve never been to Santa Fe, but I imagine it’s full of rich people saying they’re artists. I named the bag Santa Folk.” And what does she call the raffish patchwork suede number at her elbow? “It’s the Boro Borrow! It’s like something vintage that you find at the Paris flea market—at Paul Bert or Serpette,” she laughs. “But now it’s not rotten and disgusting.”
