Why Some Hotels and Resorts Offers Pillow Menu?

Had you ever had a good sleep lately?

How many hours did you enjoy your slumber?

For some of us, sleep is now the new form of luxury.

My normal sleep in order to get fully charged is 6 to 8 hours; however, I could only enjoy that kind of luxury during weekends. My weekdays only get 3 to 4 hours of sleep, and I could not help it.

Even during my vacation trips, there are times that I only get a few hours of sleep because my mind is too active with the things I wish to do, and explore. That is why choosing a good hotel with a nice duvet and pillows are important for me, as it helps me to have a good sleep.

But one thing that frequent travellers may not realize is that there is a secret menu offering some additional luxuries for the bedroom.

Have you ever heard about the pillow menu?

Just like Pan Pacific Manila and Raffles Makati, there are hotels that offer separate pillow menus. Many hotels understand the value of having a good sleep and comfort like home, that’s why this little luxury of menu exists in addition to their services.

If you are prone to neck and back pains, ask about pillow options. Many hotels like in Pan Pacific Manila offers hypoallergenic pillow for anyone with allergies or ecological pillow for people who want an aromatherapy experience.

Some hotels also offer an anti-ageing pillow, which offers a 100% cotton cover treated with vitamin E, or a manly magic pillow for firmer versions, filled with 55% goose feather and 45% goose down outside.

I’ve tried the pillow menu options from Pan Pacific Manila, and I requested the contouring pillow (with no additional cost). Same with Raffles Makati.

Here are the 12 types of pillows covered by many hotels’ pillow menus:

For the usual pillow menu, some offers;

1. Feather pillow – modern feather pillows are made from tiny, curly feathers and are incredibly fluffy so suit those who do not need a lot of support. Feathers can retain heat so if you tend to wake up warm, these pillows might exacerbate it. They are often made in combination with down.

2. Goose down pillow
– pillows made with European white goose down are the gold standard when it comes to luxe places to pop your head – you’ll practically melt into it. Made from birds’ undercoats, they are super soft and can be fluffed into your desired shape. It yields easily so while it is great for cuddling, it does not offer strong neck or back support.

3. Hypoallergenic pillow – wake up regularly with the sniffles? Then a hypoallergenic pillow is a key. It’s made from synthetic materials, such as polyester or latex, which are less likely to trigger allergies and are good for asthma sufferers, too. An anti-allergy pillow is slightly different – the material has been treated to deter dust mites.

4. Buckwheat pillow – Made from the husks of buckwheat seeds, these pillows mould well, which means they offer strong support. Plus, they’re eco-friendly. The only catch is the husks tend to rustle when moved so light sleepers might be bothered. Microbead pillows are the synthetic alternative, sans sound.

5. Body pillow – These extra-long pillows are good for cuddling if you’re sleeping alone and for pregnant women who need extra support for their hips and lower back.

6. Memory foam pillow
– When a product is developed by NASA researchers, you know it’s going to be good. Memory foam pillows are especially recommended if you sleep on your back as they mould perfectly to your body shape.

7. Latex pillow
– Similar to memory foam pillows but made from rubber-tree sap and somewhat airier, latex pillows are hypoallergenic and good for side sleepers because their firmness supports the spine consistently all the way long.

8. Cotton Pillow
– These breathable babies don’t offer substantial support on their own but when paired with another pillow, they give just the little bit extra you might be after.

Unique Pillow Offerings

9. Anti-ageing pillow – these are cotton-covered pillows, infused with vitamin E to nourish your skin as you catch your deep slumber.

10. Lullaby pillow – This type of pillow have tiny speakers within the hypoallergenic filling so you can sleep with soothing sounds surrounding you.

11. Tatami pillow – a very firm traditional pillow – used for more than 2000 years in Japan – filled with tatami fibres that offer improved ventilation.

12. Tiba pillow – a traditional Egyptian cushion made from layers of carded cotton.

Many hotels and resorts nowadays know that sleep is a serious business, and offering this kind of pillow menu I extending hospitality to all their guests. Some luxury hotels even have their own sleep consultants on hand.

So the next time you visit a 5-star or luxury hotel, ask for their pillow menu.
