The renowned magazine editor Diana Vreeland once said: "Blue jeans are the most beautiful things since the gondola." This statement rings true for anyone, whether they are a TikTok Influencer or not. Denim is timeless. And we owe it to the weavers in Nimes, France who unintentionally created the first modern denim in the early 17th century.

Denim fashion is here to stay, as many designer brands have featured their denim pieces in the Fall/Winter 2024 Collection.

Don't listen to the TikTok trends that urge you to discard your denim (even the skinny kind) because only a real denim fan who knows their own style will realize that holding on to your denim is a smart fashion choice.
Even this memorable look of Britney Spears in full denim look in the 2000 is truly iconic! |
Sometimes, denim needs more than just a wash. That was the case when I inherited a lot of denim jeans that my daughters had outgrown. I always tried to upcycle their clothes for sustainability reasons. Denim jeans were no exception.
In this fashion blog, I want to show you how I turned some of my daughters' denim jeans into a kimono jacket.
I got inspired by Instagram and Pinterest, as well as some street stylers from Tokyo. Junya Watanabe's creations also influenced me!

@blair.villanueva Upcycling old denim jeans into Y2K-inspired maxi skirt, kimono jacket, and bustier top. I have created this denim kimono jacket by combining four (4) pairs of jeans. The maxi skirt is also made from two pairs of jeans that I have upcycled.
My style is not influenced by the fashion trend, but by my mood, the clothes I already have, and the local weather. I live in Gippsland Australia, where the weather is unpredictable and changes often.
I also managed to create a denim corset top, and a shopping bag to compliment the whole look. Everything is upcycled, except for my Doc. Martens and accessories.
I love this creative way of reusing old denim jeans. How do you transform your worn-out jeans into something new?
