How to Write a Love Letter

how to write a love letter, romantic love letters, letters to Juliet, Valentine’s Day,

The sky is quite gloomy yet, there is no sign that it will rain soon. I could feel the breezy air that sometimes tickles my spine and I realized yes – it’s already February, where the temperature is changing and drops to 24degrees Celsius during nighttime. And it’s the time of the year where we can sport those cute sweater and coats we’ve been waiting to use for months.

With this beautiful temperature that feels like summer in Italy and France, it is no surprise that many of us thinks that this is the time that “romance is in the air” – flowers are blooming gorgeously, surprisingly fruits are much sweeter than other months, and people are more calm for some reasons.

Love is in the air in Bonifacio High Street. Tourists are taking souvenir photo these two gigantic bear of roses.

I overheard a male work colleague asking another about plans for this coming weekend, because apparently Valentine’s Day is still a workday. This guy on the next table told his colleagues that he booked a staycation + spa weekend at a 4-star upscale hotel as a surprise gift for his wife. Another is busy checking the online stores for gifts that offers same-day delivery. Then another guy who’s rarely speak with us suddenly says…

“…. how to write a love letter?”

They became suddenly speechless, probably thinking the right words to say. Apparently, this seems not the right time to suggest silly things. *wink

It stopped me as well. When was the last time I wrote a love letter to someone?

Then I remember the part of my life where I wrote many love letters to the people I loved. There are many thoughts that is hard to express verbally and writing is the only way for us to express it deeply, and honestly. Just like Claire did professing her love to Lorenzo in a letter that aged 50-years ago and yet, the words are still fresh, true, and never aged.

During my pre-digital life, those colored pens and scented papers are my best messengers. I save part of my school allowance to buy those gorgeously pastel printed stationeries, and many art supplies, because apparently I love personalizing my love letters – I took great time to curate my own designs and themes, and of course the handwritten messages professing my young love.

As you can see, many still write love letters!

Back then, love letters are almost forbidden at home. I have to secretly stashed it in my closet with lock-and-key so that my parentals would not see and read its content (but my Mother is very resourceful!), gave me tears when my Mom found my secret box and started burning them in front of my eyes (those days when I thought my Mother is like an evil queen, lol).

They say that “…. words (pen) are mightier than swords”, and it’s true even in this new generation.

Letters to Juliet

When I visited the Venice Piazza in September 2018, I encountered these many love letters shared by many brave lovers all over places as part of celebrating the world’s love story – containing the words of great love, the love in-pain, the one still hoping that love will come in time, heartbreaks, etc.
It felt like there is strong energy that magnets my being, telling me to look and read.

While flipping the letters and reading them silently, I felt the writers’ sincerity, their young passionate love, and I realized that tears started to run through my cheeks.

Those words felt like they are speaking to me.

Anyone who experience a beautiful feeling of love will understand these words.

Many write letters to express their secret love to someone that can’t be express profoundly because certain circumstances – must be more hurtful knowing that the message cannot be their Romeo or Juliet. But then again it is only their ways to release it from their chest, to make them feel good and moved on.

Have you experienced it before?

From curating my personalized letters/cards (making it more artsy as possible) and have it delivered via postal services (or sometimes hand-carry) nowadays I switched to sending love letters in electronic form which quickly received by my beau in few seconds. The modern communication because more convenient and easy, but sometimes I admit that I miss those days feeling a little back pain, pasting those little hearts.

Times have changed, but our genuine thoughts never aged. Love is still pure, unselfish, and profound.
Writing love letters are not easy like reciting an alphabet. Sometimes it is easy to think of it and suddenly gives us that “writer’s block” when we about to start writing. Thus, many expresses their devotion in other means, such us sending gifts, pampering their love ones,

And to share you another insight about this Love Month, I would like to share you my cousin’s open letter 7-years ago, which is still relatable to many of us.

What do you think?

I still prefer writing letters, through both email and the traditional form. Not only I can express well my thoughts, it is also a genuine gesture of spending my time curating those thoughts well as if I am speaking to the person face-to-face. The understanding is more vivid, and an opportunity of sharing the story, in a most intimate way.

Writing letters still exist, nor extinct. In addition, I believe that we should do it over and over and pass this meaning to the next generation to another.

How do you express your devotion to another? Does beautifully printed stationeries from your favorite bookshops still sparks joy to you? And tell me, do you still have those old love letters of your young love?

Sadly I lost mine…. My Mother turned them to ashes.

I would love to know yours!

xoxo, Blair

  3. This is such a beautiful post! Writing was a passion for me. Something I did for so many. And love letters were special to me. Then came the digital age, where words left the paper and went to typed versions. I still wrote loving texts, but then I could include other things like pictures and memes. My husband was not a proficient writer, however, he loved memes. His first "love letters" to me were memes that described us perfectly. As time went on, he ventured into writing his own love notes.

We just sat down and wrote how we felt whatever was on our mind was what we put in the letter and that was great it was not even orchestrated you didn’t ask anybody you just wrote a letter and that was that and he was happy to get the letter he was happy to write the letter it was just a real big thing and as I sit here and write this I begin to reminisce because the feelings that it invokes when thinking of how we used to just write to each other and tell our hearts. 1. Years ago sans computer and smartphones, and pens and papers are treated as luxury - writing letters are very important. I used to write many of them for my young love, to my parents, and now it felt good and grateful that I had experienced it and became part of my life.

  8. It's such a shame that I have been travelling SEA for almost 4 years now but I have never been to BGC. I guess when I left the PH, BGC was still not that popular among travelers. Anyway, back to the topic, "How To Write A Love Letter", I guess it's easy when it comes from the heart.

  13. Letter writing is a changing artform. I don't want to say dying as that portends the end of a special way of expression. There are so many options available these days, and many offer a faster delivery. Plus, people are simply more impatient these days.

  18. Oh, I wrote a lot to the men I've been in love with over time. I believe being honest and trying to find a way to put what you feel into words is the best advice. If one doesn't know how to put their feeling into words, it's either from lack of self-knowledge or not having the proper language skills. It's usually the first, though. And that can only be solved with long-term introspection.
