Jensen Jacob Design offers world-class design mentorship to PH

Design today is not only about giving a product a beautiful form - it leans more towards showcasing values through design. In other words, designers can improve people's lives through good designs and eventually change people's lifestyles, their mindset and, ultimately, the world.

The Design Center of the Philippines, an agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, has partnered with the Danish Embassy and Jacob Jensen Design’s, the leading design studio in Scandinavia, to help nurture the Philippines’ creative talents and skill force.

JJD will work with a number of local universities to offer different half-year and one-year programs for students, preferably 3rd year students focused on leaning design. This is in conjunction with the establishment of a satellite design studio in the country that will utilize the local creative talent and its cultural DNA for the purpose of building global awareness on creativity, design and brands that could likewise benefit Filipinos.

“Under this partnership with Jacob Jensen Design, young design students will learn and will be mentored by the Danish designers, by Jacob Jensen, specifically. They will learn new methods in design thinking, in design processes through this program,” said Design Center Head of Policy and Planning Unit Josephine Cruz.

“The nice thing about it also is that there will be a new way of looking at design in terms of industrial designs. Right now we're so much into crafts design and we're going to look forward to working with Jacob Jensen Design Studio into the industrial design area,” Cruz added.

JJD is Scandinavia’s most award-winning design consultancy and stands as an international influencer through innovative design solutions for the benefit of their clients and consumers. With almost 60 years of insight into design, innovation, communication, sustainability and technology, Jacob Jensen Design provides a wide range of creative services, helping their clients to become leaders in their industry.

“We're here to help enable young talents in this country to build great Filipino brands—that is one of the ways you can raise the living standards in any country—through Creative Education,” said Prof. Timothy Jacob Jensen, CEO and Creative Director of JJD.

“There's a lot of talent here, tradition for design. There's a fantastic talent pool here, well-educated people, young generation coming out willing to learn and be active in the business.,” said Danish Ambassador to the Philippines Jan Top Christensen.

The design studio is slated to be finished in two years, depending on the number of universities that will express intent in joining the program. DTI, Design Center, the Danish Embassy, and JJD will all work closely in launching the product and its subsequent run in the country.

“For me, the Philippines is a fantastic place to be in where I can hopefully further facilitate cooperation between Danish companies and local companies, with the assistance from the Philippine authorities. Because of the visibility of Jacob Jensen in Denmark, if they come in and they set up, it would get exposure in Danish media and that would definitely inspire even more Danish companies to come here,” said Christensen.

The ambassador noted that among the priorities for development of the Danish Embassy is in the gaming, creative, food, fashion, construction, infrastructure, and high-tech electronics industries.
“The Duterte government presented last year a 10-point social economic agenda, that is very progressive and future-oriented agenda, that if all the things in tit are implemented, the Philippines will be a better place within the time of the Duterte administrations,” Christensen added.

The eight item on the agenda is focused on promoting technology and innovation and creative arts to make it possibly for the industry to support the sustainable development of the Philippine economy.
Out of 128 economies surveyed in 2016, the Philippines ranked 96th from being 101st in 2015 in terms of creative outputs. Digital marketing and advertising are high potential markets in the country thanks to the high number of Filipino internet users.

The Philippines’ annual revenue from its video game industry amounts to $100 million, and the government and the private sector are teaming up to drive revenue.

Creative industries, such as animation and game development, fall under the fast-growing IT-BPM industry which the government pins its high hopes to due to its huge financial contribution to the Philippines’ economy. The IT-BPM industry generated more than $25 billion in revenue in 2016, and is expecting to double that with $40 billion and provide 1.8 million additional jobs by 2022.

Meeting JJD CEO Timothy Jacob Jensen
And I never thought that I will finally meet the worldly renowned designer! Thanks for our DTI Team and friends from CITEM, I’ve got an opportunity to attend his press conference, and finally meet him in person.
JJD CEO Timothy Jacob Jensen with Blair Villanueva

I’ve asked him about his personal advice he could give for all creative, especially for underprivileged Filipinos. (Thanks for DTI Team for giving me the full transcript!).

Blair Villanueva, For Urban Women: Hello, I'm Blair, blogger of For Urban Women. I have a question for you Mr. Timothy. As a creative Dane with years of experience, what are the personal advice you can give on how to change the mindset of Filipinos to engage on Creative Industry? Especially for those who are underprivileged.

Dr. Timothy Jensen: That's a hard one because I think there's more ingredients in that answer. I think self-confidence. Before I came out, I said to the Chinese college, " When I say Philippines, what do you say?", you know what they said, "maid". You can do better than maids, and diving and beaches. So, self-confidence. You are excellent, fantastic people. Somebody claimed that you are superior race than the rest of mankind when it comes to creativity. There's a hundred million people here on these fantastic islands. Self-confidence. You'd say, "how can we have self-confidence because we're a developing country and all these poor people, what are we gonna do?" Believe in it. Fight it out. Of course there can be more philosophical and deep answers to your question but that's what I can pull out right now.

Blair Villanueva, For Urban Women: Thank you for that. And also, since you've mentioned about maids for Filipinos, I do believe that these developed countries wouldn't survive without us producing maids. Imagine how Hongkong can survive. Singapore - they cannot survive without us.

Dr. Timothy Jensen: Turn that around. Be proud of it and maybe deal with it in the right perspective. Maids, there's nothing wrong with that.

Blair Villanueva, For Urban Women: Thank you.
